No matter which way the winds blow in fashion, style or trends, there are some things that never seem to be impacted by trends. The iconic Ralph Lauren polo player logo seems like it will always be a solid fact of life, just like the Nike swoosh. I certainly don’t see it as much as back in the day, but whenever it does appear it’s like an old friend you’re always happy to see.

With all the great premium denim out there from Rag & Bone, to J Brand, to A.P.C. et al., sometimes it’s nice to stick to the tried and true classics like Levi’s. As long as you nail the fit and wash, you’re good to go.

Color blocking is a nice way to break up the monotony of solid color apparel. The red and blue on this jacket is a nice compliment to each other. I also like that the hood is actually being worn and being utilized.

I met Alex at a Club Monaco event where I asked him to pose for me since I liked his outfit so much. Turns out he’s got loads of style when I visited his Tumblr page http://kangalex.com where there are several great shots of him wearing some pretty nice threads and he even makes his own signature bracelet which he sells on his site. Spending an afternoon shopping with him throughout Soho and Nolita I could tell he had a good eye and good taste.I covet his wardrobe.

This time of year with the weather transitioning and being so precarious ,it can hard to know how to dress. You want to wear a jacket, but then you get hot or you just want to run out with a t-shirt on but then a breeze or chill sets in. I like this guy’s solution where he positions his jacket as worn but has it drape off his body. Inventive to say the least. I am fond of his slouchy grey henley shirt.

I was inside the menswear store Odin in Soho perusing the racks of drool worthy clothes and labels and afterwards, when I stepped out I ran into this visitor from Australia who let me talk his picture after I complimented his waffle like, bright neon sweater. He even urged me to peek at the tag on the back of his sweater to read the label since he couldn’t remember where he got it offhand and lo and behold it was from the British brand Folk who were prominently displayed in Odin. I guess it was kismet.

Nothing beats a classic. Case in point – this gent’s Levi’s denim jacket. Minus the smart phone, he looks like he could be in New York in the 1950’s. Some items are just timeless.

This varsity jacket with the brown leather sleeves and blue contrast is a great piece and can easily work in the fall, winter or spring. He adds some nice pops of red with his scarf and laces on his Nikes.

I really like the design of this guy’s jacket because it’s something you rarely see – a quilted/stitched blazer jacket. Having a classic piece with just a bit of a twist can really set you apart and make a world of difference.

I’m digging the pink, green and grey color scheme this fella has going on. Nice to see plaid on a jacket for a change as opposed to a winter full of solid colored coats.

This is a very simple, tight, unfussy shot of Garrett sporting his Barbour jacket doing nothing more than having his hands in his pockets and standing tall. He’s worn this jacket before in other posts, but I’d say it bears repeating.

385 Canal Street/ Open until February 23rd
Shipley & Halmos won me over even more when I walked into their temporary digs to discover that the store takes its cues from and models itself after the surrounding neighborhood of Chinatown, particularly Canal Street, which is littered with tons of souveneir/hole-in-the-wall/tchotchke stores. For natives and visitors who have spent time on Canal Street and experienced store after store of cheap retail chaos, the S&H mimic is pretty great, albeit more serene. The playful irony makes the store fun, but once you see the threads, that’s where things gets serious! Their current spring line, handsomely and neatly displayed on the racks and tables most definitely put me in the mood for higher temps. I brought along model Tony Divirgilio who kindly volunteered to bring the clothes to life and he did not disappoint. The tanks, pastels and beach inspired looks with flourishes of nautical for the summer is specifically tailored to Tony’s sense of style. Both he and I were raving about each piece of clothing between shots in the changing room.
As I mentioned, the store is temporary, so take a gander down to 385 Canal Street to see what an actual Shipley & Halmos store could one day look like. I hope there are plans for a real brick and mortar location since this pop up is pretty inventive, a fun novelty and provides a great foreshadow .

Stumbled upon the very cool and chill Charlie while strolling with my friend Julie in TriBeCa. He had a preppy, hip hop vibe going on with his Air Jordans, two studs in his ears, shirt buttoned all the way and straight brim hat.

There are some sample sales worth waiting for as well as worth saving for. For the guys, Freemans Sporting Club is one such sale. I was invited to preview the sale during the Friends & Family day held prior to the official opening to the public, which is today, beginning at 10 a.m. Alix Dana, the lovely PR rep was very gracious in asking me to cover their annual Super Bowl sale for the blog. Being as I have been a huge fan and shopper of the store for quite some time, it was a privilege. I brought along Cavan Valance to model and showcase some of the awesome goods you can score for a fraction of the retail price. I even took the liberty of posting a shot of the price list to streamline your shopping experience. This would be one of the rare occasions I would urge anyone in New York reading this post, to get off my blog and run – not walk – to 8 Rivington Street and stock up on the fine, easy, solid, well-crafted, made in America threads that F.S.C. is renowned for. Belstaff is the classic British brand best known for their waterproof jackets. It is a great heritage brand that has been acquired by the Italians and recently re-branded itself to create a sexier, jet-set vibe with the designer Martin Cooper at the helm. This quilted jacket with the stand up collar is evidence that it has lost some of its stodgy presentation.

The woman in the foreground with the bright lips is my great friend Ann Yee (http://www.annyeecollection.com/), a very talented womenswear knitwear designer who I was out having Sunday brunch with. In the background is one of many stylish guys or persons in general you can find at Cafe Gitane in Nolita any day of the week. Another great four pocket jacket and grey jeans is a solid choice.

I wonder if his leather jacket is vintage or not. A lot of brands nowadays like to give their clothes that worn-in, old, vintage-y look. Some are successful at it while other brands make it look studied. Or I could be wrong altogether and he purchased it new and had years of wear and tear to give it that lived in look which is how I feel most leather jackets should look.

I’m a huge proponent of pockets in jackets and outerwear in general as it gives you less reason to carry a bag, which is something I try not to have on me. This four pocket version is both rugged and urban. The perfect piece to have during the city winters.

I recently re-connected with my old college friend Julie whom I hadn’t seen in a long time. It was like no time had passed at all during our reunion. On one of our recent outings together we spotted this super cool looking dude. That hat, that leather and those shades mixed with the hoodie and tight black jeans cemented the swagger he was pulling off that day and of course Julie was quite enamored by it all so I dedicate this post to her.

Not only did this fellow have his jeans tucked into his boots, but the boots themselves were zipped all the way down so that the top half flopped around. A unique way to anchor the look to say the least. I’ve also never seen a quilted jacket like his with lapels instead of the standard stand up collar or hood.

Yesterday’s post Texture was a great all black ensemble. Today’s post shows how to punch up a black base coat of black with some color and some contrast. The all black look can be sharp, sleek and even tough, but pairing black with different hues makes it more relaxed.

It’s all about the detailing of texture here with this fellow’s ensemble. The quilting on his leather jacket, the lining at the knees of his motocross pants and even the netting on his cap are a great way to get playful without overstating or being loud with patterns or prints. His outfit is all black, but with all that texture it saves it from being bland. Digging the white Converse kicks and Gucci belt as well.

Sometimes describing a look as very “downtown” can sound so arbitrary. Yet at other times that phrasing can also hit the nail on the head. I’d say it’s applicable here with this fellow and the typical use of words in reference to downtown style – hip, cool, urbane. A spade is just a spade sometimes as well.

I have the perfect pair of grey jeans from All Saints I bought last summer that I have yet to take to my tailor. After stopping this guy to take his picture with his nice slim pair, hopefully it will light a fire under me to check it off my to do list. I also like his charcoal bomber jacket and how he slides in the color with his green plaid shirt and burgundy boots

Labels, labels, labels. This guy has aplenty.Even his coffee cup has a label. I think when an outfit is more athletic and sport related, there tends to be more of stamp with labels. His bike from Bianchi is pretty stylin’ in the white shade and he got a lot of compliments on it from people passing by.

Some guys can stroll down streets better than others.When you think about it, for most of us the streets are the only runway that we’ll ever get to walk and the passersby are our audience, so might as well give them something nice to look at. I honestly feel if you’re dressed well it changes your molecules and something happens to your gait, your posture, your stride, not to mention the attention you get.

I was in the GANT Rugger store yesterday in Nolita talking to two guys I’ll be photographing about planning outfits and I asked them both if we could do shots where they’re wearing something other than plaid. One of the guys said “But I love plaid”, the other fellow agreed and I too fell in line with that declaration. So much for variety!

I like when a denim jacket is so fitted that when you button up the top few buttons, it creates a v formation opening the rest of the way down, precisely as this guy demonstrates with his jacket.

It’s starting to finally feel like fall in New York with the weather turning crisp. Bring on the jackets and sweaters. These two guys are fall ready with their fitted jackets in leather and denim. I particularly love the wash and fade of the Levi’s denim jacket on the right.

Many studies have shown that men who wear the color red are considered more attractive and sexually desirable to women because it makes them appear more powerful, it lends the appeal of higher status and signifies rank and even that they are more likely to make more money. Regardless of whether this guy knows that, he definitely makes the case for red.

I’ve realized that the best way to layer clothing is to mix different types of garment styles to give your look texture. For example, this guy mixed a tab front leather jacket with a regular spread collar button down shirt, as well as a henley. Not only that, but each garment is a different color which adds heft, in a good way. I also love how each of the top garments have varying lengths.

I never thought of myself as a camouflage kind of guy. Well there was that one brief spell in the mid-aughts when I fell victim to that trend when it was all the rage, but ever since, I thought I retired that look. After seeing this guy and his cool camo blazer/shirt jacket hybrid in blue with a subtle pattern, I may have to re-think my thoughts on camo.
