Cardigan

Cardigan

SoHo
Thompson and Broome St.

Today felt like the first hint of fall with a slightly cool breeze that warranted a light jacket or sweater. I like this time of year when you can still wear t-shirts, but have that one extra layer like a jacket or sweater and keep it unbuttoned or unzipped. For me, it’s an open cardigan all the way.

The Hobbler

The Hobbler

West Village
Hudson and Christopher St.

This is a man after my own heart as his outfit is pretty much a replica of my daily summer ensemble – Nike kicks, black fitted jeans and solid colored t-shirt. I much more clean cut, so I’d forgo the the beard, backpack and crutches.

Band Collar Shirt

Tab Collar Shirt

Greenwich Village
6th Avenue and Downing St.

A couple of years ago I purchased a vertical and horizontal striped/contrast band collar shirt from a thrift store and had it taken to my tailor. It’s one of my favorite shirts and it seems to garner a lot of compliments and intrigue of where I purchased it. I like that type of collar because it has an informal formality to it. I liken it to what a v-neck is to a t-shirt, a band collar button down shirt is to a regular collared button down shirt. It’s slight twist, that makes a world of difference.

From The Back

From The Back

Flatiron District
Broadway and 23rd St.

I’m definitely feeling the style and color of those Nike’s he’s sporting. I’m much more prone to take shots from a front or side view, but I’m glad that a good back shot seems to look just as good.

Scoopneck T-Shirt

Deep Scoop

SoHo
Broome and Wooster St.

Lately I’ve been toying with adding scoopnecks to my collection of t-shirts. I’m partial to a good old fashioned crew neck, but I’ve realized the wider neck adds more ventilation during those super hot days. The key is finding the right width and depth since too much dip tends to make those types of shirts too feminine looking. I think this guy finds the happy medium where it’s not too wide and not too deep.

Square Shades

Square Shades
West Village
Greewnwich Avenue and 11th St.

I’m digging the shape of these sunglasses. I’m partial to my classic Gucci aviators which cost a fortune but I’ve had for many years. It was because of seeing these shades that lit the spark to branch out and find a different shape. So far, the search has proved to be fruitless and I’m not a cheap sunglasses type of guy, but at least now I have a reference for what appeals to me.

Nike Flyknits

Nike Flyknits
Hudson Square
Spring and Varick

I’m totally obsessed with Nike’s Flyknit Racer shoes. The two colors I’m jonesing after are sold out everywhere and I can’t settle for the other loud colors they come in. This dude is rocking the Chukka version as he speeds away and it was a reminder of how much I need those kicks in my life. But not the Chukka version. Only the Racer version in my color of choice will do. The heart wants, what the heart wants!

Tanked

Tanked
NoMad
5th Avenue and 27th St.

And we’re off! The summer has officially become hot and humid and that means tank tops are making the rounds heavily on the streets. This actually a modest version as lately I’ve come to see some tanks that are a lot more revealing and showy. As the summer progresses, I’m sure I’ll stumble upon a wide array of tanks.

White & Khaki

White & Khaki
Greenwich Village
6th Avenue and 12th St.

The white shirt and khaki combo is so classic and one of my favorite summer looks. Keep your striped shirts. I’ll take this look any day. That tee and those kicks are so crisp. I am so down with white in the summer.

Thin Stripes

Slow Week 142 copy
SoHo
Mercer and Prince St.

This fella gets his proportions. The short sleeves fall perfectly at mid bicep, the hem is just below the waist, and the cuff of his shorts rises right above the knee. Everything is fitted, cut to his body and frame but not tight. Let this guy be your guide on how to do the t-shirt and shorts combo without coming off as though you look thirteen years old with bad cuts, too much fabric and unflattering loose fits.

For The Love Of Nike

NikeGreenwich Village
MacDougal and 8th St.

I don’t know what it is about Nike, but to quote an acquaintance – “There’s something about the swoosh”. I’ve tried other athletic brands – Adidas, New Balance, Under Armour et al., but they don’t do it for me quite like Nike does and I inevitably keep coming back around. Knowing where your loyalty lies saves a lot of time, not to mention money.

Maroon Shorts

Maroon Shorts
SoHo
Prince and Mercer St.

I’m digging the color scheme of this outfit with the blue shirt, black sunglasses, maroon shorts and white kicks, all mononchromatic. Bonus for the way he cuffs up his shorts above the knee so they look more well proportioned.

Rough Around The Edges

Rough Around The Edges
Chinatown
Canal and Lafayette St.

What can I say? Not every guy is going to be the perfect gentleman. I don’t advocate calling women bitches but his shirt is more about humor than anything else. Here’s my take on his shirt – his preference for alcohol is beer, his ride of choice is a motorcycle and his desire for company is for beautiful women.

Neon Shirt

Neon Shirt

TriBeCa
6th Avenue and Laight St.

Brighter days are here again and so is brighter apparel. Neon in my wardrobe usually finds itself in very subtle ways – shoe laces, on a small logo, or a pocket and usually on some form of athletic gear. If you do wear it, it’s best to stick to just one item as you can clearly see it stands out and speaks for itself.

Dog Days

Dog Days

SoHo
Spring and Sullivan St.

Sometimes it’s just about sitting on a stoop, chillin’ with your pooch. New York can be overstimulating and always on the go, so it’s nice to see dudes just pause.

Black Camo Shorts

Black Camo Shorts

West Village
Hudson and Charles St.

Here we are back to shorts season and first out of the gate is a nice pair of black camoflouge, high above the knee and without all that bagginess or looseness that can make a guy’s legs look thinner than they are. Like most things on this blog, it’s all about the fit.

Nike Socks

Nike Socks

Chelsea
9th Ave. and 29th St.

Black Nike socks pulled all the way up to the chins is all the rage in the city. I spot so many of them on guys that I could do a whole feature just on that. Truth be told, whenever I go for a run I do have the same socks and wear them constantly.

Black Biker

Black Biker

SoHo
6th Ave. and Thompson St.

There are two occassions where an all black ensemble is very appropriate – the first being super formal in a tuxedo, the second being badass in some leather, jeans and riding a motorcycle. From the helmet, to the gloves, to the shades and the Ducati he is dipped in black but just to break things up a tad I love the red swoosh on the Nikes.

Alex Kang

Alex Kang

NoHo
Broadway and Bleecker St.

I met Alex at a Club Monaco event where I asked him to pose for me since I liked his outfit so much. Turns out he’s got loads of style when I visited his Tumblr page http://kangalex.com where there are several great shots of him wearing some pretty nice threads and he even makes his own signature bracelet which he sells on his site. Spending an afternoon shopping with him throughout Soho and Nolita I could tell he had a good eye and good taste.I covet his wardrobe.

Detailed Polo

Detailed Polo

Lower East Side
Stanton and Ludlow St.

His polo shirt has subtle details that switch it up from your typical polo shirt. The placket of buttons is a bit longer, the hem is a bit higher, there are two flap pockets on the chest and overall it’s fitted. This is how polos were meant to look.

Middle Ground

Hot & Cold

East Village
Bowery and 2nd St.

This time of year with the weather transitioning and being so precarious ,it can hard to know how to dress. You want to wear a jacket, but then you get hot or you just want to run out with a t-shirt on but then a breeze or chill sets in. I like this guy’s solution where he positions his jacket as worn but has it drape off his body. Inventive to say the least. I am fond of his slouchy grey henley shirt.

Doppelganger

Doppelganger

Greenwich Village
5th Avenue and 11th St.

This fellow reminds me of the caucasian version of myself. I’m pretty much that height and body type,I wear my hair like his, like him, I sport aviators, his monochromatic style of dress is how I do it and without looking at the label I know I own that exact same scarf he’s wearing. I think we look good 🙂

Grunge

Grunge

Upper East Side
68th and Lexington

Back in the early 90’s the term and style of grunge was all the rage. Like all fads, trends, styles and fashions it’s due for an updated comeback. Not that I have seen enough evidence to support a comeback but this guy’s outfit with the loose flannel plaid shirt, baggy shorts and mismatched socks certainly reflects the style.

Saturday Casual

Saturday Casual

I was drawn to Ohrun’s casual weekend outfit by virtue of the mix of color in his comfortable athletic wear. He gives a great example of how to be sporty without being slovenly.

Gearing Up

Gearing Up

SoHo
6th Avenue and Spring St.

There’s always this specific time of year when spring is officially here, but the temperature only slightly upticks. For some people after a brutal winter, that small increase in warmth is a enough to throw on shorts, despite the lingering chill in the air. Such was the case this past weekend where I saw an onslaught of shorts on guys who were definitely pre-spring attired.

Red Socks

Red Socks

Lower East Side

Those sneakers he’s wearing with the heart face are by Play by Comme des Garcons, the cult Japanese label. I like how he matches the heart with a pair of red socks and rolls up his pants to give you all his ankle action.

There’s something about buttoning a shirt all the way up that makes it look more “proper”. It’s a different kind of sexy as opposed to leaving a few unbuttoned.

That striped sweater he’s wearing just looks and feels like spring. Maybe because he’s not wearing a jacket or maybe because he pairs it with khakis or maybe because the sweater has lighter shades or maybe it’s all of the above.

This varsity jacket with the brown leather sleeves and blue contrast is a great piece and can easily work in the fall, winter or spring. He adds some nice pops of red with his scarf and laces on his Nikes.

First Day Of Spring

First Day Of Spring

Greenwich Village
MacDougal and 8th St.

There seems to be a palpable, collective sigh of relief in the air that spring is finally here, although the weather has yet to catch up, but no matter as long as it’s official. I’m so ready for the days of dressing without a coat or jacket and just wearing a sweater or crewneck like this fellow and being outside more.

Wide Lapels

University Place and 12th St.

This is one of the bigger, heftier coats I’ve seen this winter. The wide lapels are old school and I’ve seen their re-emergence on coats on a few guys around town lately. I’m digging his printed scarf as well as his navy beanie which matches nicely to the coat.

Dave Lilja

Cafe Habana

I stumbled upon model Dave Lilja at the typically mobbed Cafe Habana in Nolita on a Saturday afternoon. What caught my eye was his woven brightly hued sneakers and his fur trimmed coat. He had a great look since he’s Swedish and Filipino and his agency is based out of Denmark. He mentioned that he was about to head to the Midwest to shoot a campaign for the Express brand and that he had also done some work for H&M. Upon googling him, I could see why he makes a superb model. I took the liberty of posting his link below.

Flashback Friday: Awash in Grey

Flashback Friday: Awash in Grey

Lower East Side
Delancey St.

Everyone is talking about how they can’t wait for spring and I couldn’t agree more, but what I find interesting is that there are some guys who dress opposite the season. This guy for example was wearing a wool sweater and hat in the dead heat of summer on a humid day. But I did find his harem sweat pants and wide shawl sweater very funky, so he can do whatever he wants!

Drive By

West Village
Greenwich Ave. and 12th St.

This shot was literally a drive by as I was in my friend’s car in the passenger seat and we were waiting for the light to change when I spotted this fella approaching and as the light turned green she slowly drove past as I rolled the window down so I could capture him. For me, it’s all about those crisp, white, Nike kicks.

Zip Up Vest

Greenwich Village

A few months back I posted a shot of a guy in midtown wearing a black quilted vest who had a more business look related to that part of town. See link below.

In this shot, another quilted black vest is showcased by this fella and his has a more downtown vibe. I’m fond of how each vest represents their respective ‘hood.
