Navy Hooded Coat

Navy Hooded Coat

Hudson Square
Varick and Vandam St.

This type of hooded, 3/4 length coat was exactly the type I was looking for all this past fall and winter but could never find the right one. I did come close to finding one from the label Wings + Horns at Steven Alan but it was too long. But alas as the cold weather is waning, I’ll have to resume my hunt next year and I’ll have this pic as a reference.

Burgundy Coat

Burgundy Coat

SoHo
Broome and Lafayette St.

I’ve actually seen this type of double breasted coat all over town all winter but only in shades of black, brown or navy. The monotony finally gets broken up with a rich wine hued burgundy shade that this guy wears with a matching tie and even the boots. Nice touch.

Cab Couple

Cab Couple

West Village
6th Ave. and Washington Place

Just a typical casual Sunday with a sporty dude with the requisite scruff, Yankees cap, hoodie jacket, jeans and sneakers and his lady hailing a cab.

Wide Lapels

Wide Lapels

Greenwich Village
University Place and 12th St.

This is one of the bigger, heftier coats I’ve seen this winter. The wide lapels are old school and I’ve seen their re-emergence on coats on a few guys around town lately. I’m digging his printed scarf as well as his navy beanie which matches nicely to the coat.

Dave Lilja

Dave Lilja

NoLIta
Cafe Habana

I stumbled upon model Dave Lilja at the typically mobbed Cafe Habana in Nolita on a Saturday afternoon. What caught my eye was his woven brightly hued sneakers and his fur trimmed coat. He had a great look since he’s Swedish and Filipino and his agency is based out of Denmark. He mentioned that he was about to head to the Midwest to shoot a campaign for the Express brand and that he had also done some work for H&M. Upon googling him, I could see why he makes a superb model. I took the liberty of posting his link below.

Kareem on 8th St.

Kareem on 8th St.

Greenwich Village
MacDougal and 8th St.

I love this all black outfit Kareem is wearing. The gold buttons on the overcoat, the texture of the motocross pants, the kicks, crewneck and his specs are just so on point. Everything he’s doing works.

Urban Lumberjack

Urban Lumberjack

NoLIta
Prince and Mulberry St.

I think the title of this post is very apropos. It’s the perfect mix of Maine and Manhattan. Those frames on his face look great and a white henley peeking out from all those cold weather layers is so fresh.

Knit Cap

SoHo

He is wearing his knit, cream colored fisherman’s cap very well. His hooded army green coat and denim on denim outfit are also pretty solid.

Lafayette Atkinson on 8th Ave.

Lafayette Atkinson on 8th Ave.

Chelsea
8th Ave. and 17th St.

It was all about the cut, stitching details and how Lafayette’s double breasted coat was fitting to his frame that cemented it for me, not to mention the nice way his collar stood up, the way he wrapped his scarf and the slick, brown/burgundy leather gloves that added a nice pop. Also, slit side chest pockets on a coat are the best invention ever. I have some in my Rag & Bone winter coat and they are the best hand warmers and so convenient to stick my phone in.

Fanning Out

Fanning Out

David Spiro
Lower east side/ Extra Place and 1st St.

I was a huge fan of this coat worn by Mr. Spiro on one of our outings. The length, the color, the fabric, the cut and lapels all appealed to my taste. I also dug the fact that he paired it with some black jeans to contrast the lightness of the coat. Also, check out those killer boots he’s wearing.

A Pair of Red Wings

A Pair of Red Wings

Greenwich Village
Thompson and Bleecker

Red Wing boots are functional and stylish at the same time and are simply a great winter boot period. I wouldn’t even mind if a friend of mine was wearing his at the same time. Not into the twins look, but for Red Wings I’d make an exception.

Lessons From A Collar

Lessons From A Collar

SoHo
6th Ave. and Vandam St.

I was consulting a friend the other day about clothes in his closest and when he put on his pea coat I suggested he turn the collar up. When he looked in the mirror he couldn’t believe what a difference it made and how much cooler it made him and the coat look. I’m going to send him this shot to give him another example.

Man In The Middle

Man In The Middle

Lower East Side
Bowery and Houston

This is a nice variation on the traditional peacoat with the side zipper. I like the way he winterizes the rest of his look with the hat, fingerless gloves and boots.

Silver

Silver

West Village

Digging this man’s quilted, short, spread collar, grey, snap button coat with two different breast pockets. It’s even better that it matches his grey hair on top.

Head Gear

For these serious temps, you need some serious coverage and this guy goes all out in this hat/hood hybrid. Is there a name for this sort of thing? If so and you know it, let me know.

Tiffany’s Doorman

Tiffany's Doorman

Uptown
Tiffany’s/ Fifth Ave. and 57th St.

The thing that struck me about the Tiffany’s doorman is that his scarf and tie were cleverly matched to the color of their infamous “Tiffany’s blue” on the store’s boxes and bags. Tiffany’s is certainly not the most masculine store, as it seems to cater more to women who in my experience go ape shit for anything that comes in that blue box, but they do actually sell men’s jewelry. The great thing is that the items they do have for men lean towards classic and simple.

Peeking Out

Peeking Out

East Village
Third Ave. and 11th Street

It’s that time of year to drape layers on top of layers. Sometimes I can even catch a glimpse of the person peeking out from underneath all those layers. I like how this guy’s black coat is saved from blandness with his patterned snow flake gloves and red and blue plaid scarf.

Freemans Sporting Club (F.S.C.) Super Bowl Sale

Lower East Side
Freemans Sporting Club/ 8 Rivington Street

There are some sample sales worth waiting for as well as worth saving for. For the guys, Freemans Sporting Club is one such sale. I was invited to preview the sale during the Friends & Family day held prior to the official opening to the public, which is today, beginning at 10 a.m. Alix Dana, the lovely PR rep was very gracious in asking me to cover their annual Super Bowl sale for the blog. Being as I have been a huge fan and shopper of the store for quite some time, it was a privilege. I brought along Cavan Valance to model and showcase some of the awesome goods you can score for a fraction of the retail price. I even took the liberty of posting a shot of the price list to streamline your shopping experience. This would be one of the rare occasions I would urge anyone in New York reading this post, to get off my blog and run – not walk – to 8 Rivington Street and stock up on the fine, easy, solid, well-crafted, made in America threads that F.S.C. is renowned for. Stay tuned later this afternoon for a second post on the sale featuring more of the stylish merchandise. For more details, click the link below.

Inside Job

From Inside

Upper East Side
Dean & Deluca/ 85th and Madison

I was scarfing down a bagel and having an espresso at the Dean & Deluca food shop on the Upper East Side when I realized I was sitting in the perfect corner window to people watch and take pictures. I was off to an appointment so I only managed to get this one shot of this guy adjusting his hood. Not bad for only sitting there a few minutes.

David Spiro in NoHo

David Spiro
NoHo

David Spiro is back! This time it’s all about him rocking camouflage both on his pants and socks and him standing in front of some cool graffiti. I could write more, but I feel these pictures speak for themselves.

The Trinity

The Trinity

Greenwich Village
6th Ave. and Bleecker St.

This was a bit of a miracle shot to get all three of these very stylish guys aligned and unobstructed as they were crossing the street. All three of them are nailing their own individual look with such nonchalance. They’re all very inspiring.

Bundle Up

Bundle Up

Greenwich Village
5th Ave. and 11th St.

Today feels truly cold in New York. The most frigid in a long time and yet I’m still able to capture stylish cold weather looks. Layering heavily is the way to go if still want to look your best while shielding yourself from the elements. I particularly like the shawl collar on this guy’s pea coat and contrasting the blue with the light hat and scarf.

Flash of Red

Flash of Red

Greenwich Village
5th Ave. and 12th St.

Red is one of the best colors to pick up the drab winter weather wardrobe as displayed by this guy. It just gives it that nice pop and is best done through the accessories – hats, gloves, layering piece etc.

Fur Trimmed Hood

Fur Trimmed Hood

Greenwich Village

There’s something about that fur hood that makes his Canada Goose coat way more appealing. I probably would not have taken his picture without it. It’s what is known as a deal breaker in the picture selection process 🙂

Coffee & Briefcase

Coffee & Briefcase

Greenwich Village
6th Ave. and Bleecker St.

Love the way this guy is two fisting it in the more professional manner with a coffee and briefcase from Jack Spade. It’s common sense and somewhat of an unwritten style rule, but blue and brown are two of the best colors to pair together that compliment each other well.

Military Peacoat

Miltary Peacoat

Flatiron District
Broadway and 23rd St.

It’s pretty much black coat weather/season this time of year. The streets are blanketed with it. If must wear basic black at least make it a bit stylish with some details like this guy – double breasted, military style, slanted flack pockets, a nice collar and of course a good fit.

Throwback Thursday: Fur Shawl

Throwback Thursday: Fur Shawl

SoHo
Spring and Crosby St.

When I began compiling pictures for the blog last winter, this was one of the first guys I shot. No matter what your attitude towards fur, you can understand why I was immediately drawn to his coat and collar. The color combo itself deserves a thumbs up.

Driving Shoes

Driving Shoes

Greenwich Village
6th Ave. and Bleecker St.

Driving shoes or driving moccasins are soft loafers with little rubber bumps for soles. They are very leisurely. I also equate them with being very Italian because the luxury label Tod’s from Italy makes the best and ahem….some of the most expensive pairs. I feel they instantly add that European touch as evidenced by this fellow.

Camel Coat

Camel Coat

Flatiron District
Broadway and 21st St.

Today is the first day I’m breaking out my top coat for fall. In honor of that occasion, I’m posting the first top coat shot I’ve taken this fall. This gent’s is slightly boxy which makes it look and feel more enveloping, a bit like a blanket. The tie of the scarf is excellent as well as are the frames of his glasses. He definitely likes his shades of brown.

Boxer

Boxer

Chelsea
7th Ave. and 19th St.

I found this guy bypassing a slew of open cabs that all stopped to catch him as a fare, only to find that someone was picking him up as they hauled this box into the trunk. Him standing on the street gave me enough time to take a decent amount of shots. This is a great cold day outfit with his toggle coat, hat and scarf. I prefer dressing like this on colder days as opposed to any sort of puffy coat or bubble jacket.

Sunday Morning Coffee Run

Sunday Morning Coffee Run

West Village
West 4th and 12th St.

I took this shot early Sunday morning on my way to a breakfast meeting. What I love about his look is that it’s the perfect casual weekend day look. He didn’t step out of his apartment to grab coffee in some lazy sweats or worse, pajamas. He still made the effort to look put together but in a relaxed sort of way. It feels thrown together without much thought or effort for a Sunday morning errand, but it still manages to look presentable and not sloppy or slovenly.

Beltway

Beltway

NoLIta
Spring and Mulberry St.

I love shooting on the narrow side streets of NoLIta. It’s close enough to my neighborhood of SoHo, but a totally different vibe. In this shot you can tell there’s hardly anyone around which is a nice change of pace from the madness and manic crowds that is Broadway, just a few blocks away.

It’s a rarity to see a guy with a coat where it’s belted at the waist. Notice how he ties it at the side, rather than the front. It’s also a bit of a military look with the glasses to match.

All Black and Slick

TriBeCa
TriBeCa Grand Hotel

It’s interesting to see people doing their jobs in the city and if they look good doing it, all the better. I noticed the doorman of this hotel trying to hail a cab for a guest and good thing for me he was out there a while with no luck, as a lot of cabs were taken or off duty because I was able to get a few shots of him. That is some mighty slick hair he’s sporting matched with his all black ensemble. My favorite part is the big, oversize scarf he’s wearing and the way he ties it. It has the proportions of a mini blanket. I definitely gotta get me one of those next winter.

Profile and Peacoat

Profile and Peacoat

SoHo
West Broadway and Grand St.

I caught this photo on the fly as my back was turned to this guy as he was walking past. When I turned around, I was able to capture a side view profile and his navy blue pea coat. I own a black, cashmere/wool blend pea coat with a stand up collar that I purchased at the menswear label UNIS in Nolita (a downtown New York neighborhood). I wore the hell out of it for a few years and now it’s stored away and I only wear it a few times out of the year during the colder months. It’s a classic and will always be in my wardrobe. Some things in your closet, you just don’t get rid of, no matter what the condition.

Missoni Man

Missoni Man

TriBeCa
West Broadway and White St.

The luxury Italian Brand Missoni is the creator of this ubiquitous print seen here on this gentleman via his scarf. It’s a classic, non-trendy print, somewhat like cheetah print. Fashion comes and goes, but certain styles are timeless. A lot of this outfit is timeless in fact – the navy pea coat, the straight leg denim and brown wing tip shoes.

The Beginning – Part 2

The Beginning - Part 2

SoHo
Spring and Sullivan St.

I am spoiled and grateful to live in SoHo. I can capture a lot of style, just by walking out my front door. But I like the variety of other neighborhoods. In fact, because it’s so easy for me to just shoot in SoHo, it gives me the impetus to branch out to other parts of town. This shot was taken right at the corner of where I live. So to reiterate, (see part 1), I don’t have to travel far to get the goods.

I can’t tell if his pant leg is purposefully rolled up or if it’s circumstantial. Either way, it’s a nice touch. I also like the color blocking of his coat and pants.

Shades of Grey

I personally love the color grey. It’s a fundamental basic in my wardrobe. I even like it as a base color better than black. I love it when I spot grey on guys, whether it be a suit, coloring of the hair, a cool accessory or a coat. Check out the shades of grey in this gallery and how they diversify it.
