Weekday Weekend

Slow Week 054 copy
NoHo
Lafayette and Great Jones St.

Having a day off during the week can feel like you’re on holiday. Walking around the streets you get a sense of others who are in the same position, running errands, leisurely reading in coffee shops, walking dogs etc. But mostly it’s the sense that you can dress down a bit, like this fella sporting the athletic-preppy-day off look.

Good On A Bike

Good On A Bike
Chelsea
8th Avenue and 23rd St.

Biking around the city is often times geared towards more athletic clothing since it can feel like more of a sport than a leisurely mode of transportation. I’m more of the camp that would wear my work or going out outfit on the bike rather than carry a bag and change once I got to my destination. This is New York! Who has time for all of that.

Yellow Tee

Yellow Tee
Upper West Side
Broadway and 72nd St.

It’s day after day Labor Day and the unofficial beginning of fall is the one of the hottest days in the city! It’s still t-shirt time as long as the weather is this hot. I’m going to squeeze as much use out of my bright colored clothing before the chill sets in and I’m back in sweaters. Yellow is one color I don’t have much of, but here on this guy, it definitely shows the appeal.

Tan Jeans

Tan Jeans

Midtown East
Third Avenue and 52nd St.

This color denim is light enough to wear in summer and can also transition into fall since it falls on the brown spectrum. Blue and black jeans are staples but can get a little monotonous. Variety in denim is good to get a change of routine.

Khaki Suit

Khaki Suit
SoHo
Prince and Sullivan St.

A khaki suit is just so perfectly summer even though it still covers you up, aesthetically, it looks so lightweight. It’s also the perfect type of suit to wear to a wedding or formal occasion during the warmer months.

Ringleader

Ringleader

Hudson Square
Spring and Varick St.

Jewelry is a very personal thing and just like clothing it can be done well or the opposite. I was struck by how this gent placed his rings at the pinky and ring finger. I used to think that all I needed was a good, solid watch but lately I’ve been adding rings, necklaces, bracelets and switching my pieces up. I’ve come to discover some great, not too expensive jewelry makers for guys and it’s nice to focus on the accessories instead of so heavily on the apparel.

Printed Matter

Printed Matter
Chinatown
Canal and Lafayette St.

I tend to be a monochromatic dress by nature, but lately I’ve been dabbling into shirts with subtle prints to create some variety in my wardrobe and find myself seeking prints and patterns more often as opposed to my usual leanings of solid color or plaid. I particularly like this print this guy is wearing as it’s floral but not too flashy or loud.

The Perfect Fade

The Perfect Fade

Flatiron District
Fifth Avenue and 23rd St.

There are brands out there that treat and wash their jeans to give them that lived in, faded look. I think the only way to achieve that look to perfection is if you actually break them down yourself so that they mold to your body and weather and age from constant use and everyday wear and tear. There are some jeans you want crisp and stiff and other times, there’s nothing like a pair of old faves that have gathered some mileage and look as such.

Summer Whites

Summer Whites

SoHo
Prince and Broadway

I have this slight dread of wearing white or light colored clothing as I’m afraid to get them dirty and have marks or stains show up on my pristine whites. I must get over that as white looks so good against my skin tone. It actually looks good against any skin tone as it magically makes you look less pale if you are so and more tan if you have darker tones.

Pompadour

Pompadour

Nolita
Lafayette and Spring St.

Guys sporting big hair is something I rarely see, so it’s refreshing to capture a coif with some added weight and heft. The clean, fitted, preppy outfit against his already lean and trim frame makes the hair look even grander. He rocks it.

The Blue Shirt

The Blue Shirt
Greenwich Village
Greenwich Avenue and Christopher St.

Just like my vast collection of plaid shirts, I should probably calm down with my wide array of blue shirts. But there are different types of blue shirts, I tell myself. I love the versatility of the blue shirt. Dress it up, dress it down, it’s a great go to when I can’t be bothered to figure out what to wear.

West Village Weekender

West Village Weekender
West Village
Bleecker and Christopher St.

There is so much about this guy and this couple that is “West Village”. For those of you who live in New York and have observed the clogged streets of the West Village on weekend, you know what I mean – the stroller, the Magnolia Bakery bag, the plaid shirt and black jeans, the Saturday stubble. All the downtown cliches apply, but it does look good.

Square Shades

Square Shades
West Village
Greewnwich Avenue and 11th St.

I’m digging the shape of these sunglasses. I’m partial to my classic Gucci aviators which cost a fortune but I’ve had for many years. It was because of seeing these shades that lit the spark to branch out and find a different shape. So far, the search has proved to be fruitless and I’m not a cheap sunglasses type of guy, but at least now I have a reference for what appeals to me.

Nike Flyknits

Nike Flyknits
Hudson Square
Spring and Varick

I’m totally obsessed with Nike’s Flyknit Racer shoes. The two colors I’m jonesing after are sold out everywhere and I can’t settle for the other loud colors they come in. This dude is rocking the Chukka version as he speeds away and it was a reminder of how much I need those kicks in my life. But not the Chukka version. Only the Racer version in my color of choice will do. The heart wants, what the heart wants!

Tanked

Tanked
NoMad
5th Avenue and 27th St.

And we’re off! The summer has officially become hot and humid and that means tank tops are making the rounds heavily on the streets. This actually a modest version as lately I’ve come to see some tanks that are a lot more revealing and showy. As the summer progresses, I’m sure I’ll stumble upon a wide array of tanks.

White & Khaki

White & Khaki
Greenwich Village
6th Avenue and 12th St.

The white shirt and khaki combo is so classic and one of my favorite summer looks. Keep your striped shirts. I’ll take this look any day. That tee and those kicks are so crisp. I am so down with white in the summer.

White Jeans

White Jeans
West Village
Hudson and Christopher St.

It’s officially summer in the city and bring on the slew of white jeans. I personally can’t bring myself to go this white, so I’ve opted for a stone, grey, light wash that feels less vibrant white. I didn’t realize how much wear they would get, but I’ve been seduced by light jeans.

Thin Stripes

Slow Week 142 copy
SoHo
Mercer and Prince St.

This fella gets his proportions. The short sleeves fall perfectly at mid bicep, the hem is just below the waist, and the cuff of his shorts rises right above the knee. Everything is fitted, cut to his body and frame but not tight. Let this guy be your guide on how to do the t-shirt and shorts combo without coming off as though you look thirteen years old with bad cuts, too much fabric and unflattering loose fits.

Maroon Shorts

Maroon Shorts
SoHo
Prince and Mercer St.

I’m digging the color scheme of this outfit with the blue shirt, black sunglasses, maroon shorts and white kicks, all mononchromatic. Bonus for the way he cuffs up his shorts above the knee so they look more well proportioned.

Rough Around The Edges

Rough Around The Edges
Chinatown
Canal and Lafayette St.

What can I say? Not every guy is going to be the perfect gentleman. I don’t advocate calling women bitches but his shirt is more about humor than anything else. Here’s my take on his shirt – his preference for alcohol is beer, his ride of choice is a motorcycle and his desire for company is for beautiful women.

Double Breasted Suit

Slow Week 108 copy

Nolita
Lafeyette and Prince St.

I find that European men in the city are more prone to wear the double breasted jacket. I like the mix of casual cotton twill fabric and side pockets with formality and structure of a typical wool suit.

Mad Hatter

Mad Hatter

How nice to see a proper hat in sea of baseball caps. His accessories game is pretty tight with this ensemble and he’s even sporting some colored nails.

Short Shorts

Short Shorts

Greenwich Village
Carmine and Bleecker St.

The shorts he’s wearing were originally those baggy, loose, wide legged, uninspiring cargo shorts that still too many guys painfully wear, even in New York. I didn’t realize that by inventively cutting a few inches off the hem would make these shorts so much more appealing as this crafty guy seemed to do.

Square Buckle

Square Buckle

SoHo
Prince and West Broadway

I’m on the hunt for the perfect square buckle belt. I’m finding that either the metal of the buckle is not up to par or it’s that the leather is not as quality as I’d like it to be. I like how this fellow’s looks a tad worn it, so I guess this is one time I have to go for vintage.

Dog Days

Dog Days

SoHo

Sometimes it’s just about sitting on a stoop, chillin’ with your pooch. New York can be overstimulating and always on the go, so it’s nice to see dudes just pause.

Black Camo Shorts

Black Camo Shorts

West Village
Hudson and Charles St.

Here we are back to shorts season and first out of the gate is a nice pair of black camoflouge, high above the knee and without all that bagginess or looseness that can make a guy’s legs look thinner than they are. Like most things on this blog, it’s all about the fit.

White Polo

White Polo

The long sleeve polo shirt is something I rarely see anymore, but it’s a great spring piece that’s a nice alternative to your basic long sleeve crew neck shirt. I like how this one has a chest pocket.

These two lounging on a bench with beverages from La Colombe Coffee, both on their phones looking so very downtown is the epitome of what you’ll see in Nolita.

Preppy Boarder

Preppy Boarder

Greenwich Village
Washington Square Park

Your typical skateboarder in New York is pretty identifiable with their hipster, cool, downtown way of dressing. I was surprised to notice a preppy, almost waspy skateboarder with his plaid shirt jacket, sleek aviators, good watch, rugged boots and fitted jeans. I guess you really can’t judge a book by it’s cover.

Color Block Jacket

Color Block Jacket

Color blocking is a nice way to break up the monotony of solid color apparel. The red and blue on this jacket is a nice compliment to each other. I also like that the hood is actually being worn and being utilized.

Black Biker

Black Biker

SoHo
6th Ave. and Thompson St.

There are two occassions where an all black ensemble is very appropriate – the first being super formal in a tuxedo, the second being badass in some leather, jeans and riding a motorcycle. From the helmet, to the gloves, to the shades and the Ducati he is dipped in black but just to break things up a tad I love the red swoosh on the Nikes.

Detailed Polo

Detailed Polo

Lower East Side
Stanton and Ludlow St.

His polo shirt has subtle details that switch it up from your typical polo shirt. The placket of buttons is a bit longer, the hem is a bit higher, there are two flap pockets on the chest and overall it’s fitted. This is how polos were meant to look.

Middle Ground

Hot & Cold

East Village
Bowery and 2nd St.

This time of year with the weather transitioning and being so precarious ,it can hard to know how to dress. You want to wear a jacket, but then you get hot or you just want to run out with a t-shirt on but then a breeze or chill sets in. I like this guy’s solution where he positions his jacket as worn but has it drape off his body. Inventive to say the least. I am fond of his slouchy grey henley shirt.

Doppelganger

Greenwich Village

This fellow reminds me of the caucasian version of myself. I’m pretty much that height and body type,I wear my hair like his, like him, I sport aviators, his monochromatic style of dress is how I do it and without looking at the label I know I own that exact same scarf he’s wearing. I think we look good 🙂

Denim on Denim

Hudson Square

I’ve always felt that denim paired with denim was a little too much of a good thing, but I’ve learned to loosen up on that rule when I see that when you contrast the denim with different shades and weights, it actually looks great.

I was drawn to Ohrun’s casual weekend outfit by virtue of the mix of color in his comfortable athletic wear. He gives a great example of how to be sporty without being slovenly.

Gearing Up

Gearing Up

SoHo
6th Avenue and Spring St.

There’s always this specific time of year when spring is officially here, but the temperature only slightly upticks. For some people after a brutal winter, that small increase in warmth is a enough to throw on shorts, despite the lingering chill in the air. Such was the case this past weekend where I saw an onslaught of shorts on guys who were definitely pre-spring attired.

Nothing beats a classic. Case in point – this gent’s Levi’s denim jacket. Minus the smart phone, he looks like he could be in New York in the 1950’s. Some items are just timeless.

That striped sweater he’s wearing just looks and feels like spring. Maybe because he’s not wearing a jacket or maybe because he pairs it with khakis or maybe because the sweater has lighter shades or maybe it’s all of the above.
