Good On A Bike

Good On A Bike
Chelsea
8th Avenue and 23rd St.

Biking around the city is often times geared towards more athletic clothing since it can feel like more of a sport than a leisurely mode of transportation. I’m more of the camp that would wear my work or going out outfit on the bike rather than carry a bag and change once I got to my destination. This is New York! Who has time for all of that.

Well Cut

Cut Well

Chelsea
8th Avenue and 18th St.

I’ve been helping an acquaintance who works in finance with some wardrobe styling and personal shopping. He practically lives in suits six days a week. When we tackled his closet, he had amazing suits, good taste and quality but the fit and cut were all wrong. Before we even did a lick of shopping, I had him take all of his suits to his tailor to fit and mold them to his frame. A month later when he got them back he realized just how wrong he was in sizing and now he actually enjoys wearing the suits, gets tons of compliments and feels much more confident in them.

Tan Jeans

Tan Jeans

Midtown East
Third Avenue and 52nd St.

This color denim is light enough to wear in summer and can also transition into fall since it falls on the brown spectrum. Blue and black jeans are staples but can get a little monotonous. Variety in denim is good to get a change of routine.

The Perfect Fade

The Perfect Fade

Flatiron District
Fifth Avenue and 23rd St.

There are brands out there that treat and wash their jeans to give them that lived in, faded look. I think the only way to achieve that look to perfection is if you actually break them down yourself so that they mold to your body and weather and age from constant use and everyday wear and tear. There are some jeans you want crisp and stiff and other times, there’s nothing like a pair of old faves that have gathered some mileage and look as such.

From The Back

Flatiron District

I’m definitely feeling the style and color of those Nike’s he’s sporting. I’m much more prone to take shots from a front or side view, but I’m glad that a good back shot seems to look just as good.

Tanked

Tanked
NoMad
5th Avenue and 27th St.

And we’re off! The summer has officially become hot and humid and that means tank tops are making the rounds heavily on the streets. This actually a modest version as lately I’ve come to see some tanks that are a lot more revealing and showy. As the summer progresses, I’m sure I’ll stumble upon a wide array of tanks.

Purple Shorts

Purple Shorts

Chelsea
7th Avenue and 21st St.

Shorts going well above the knee is really appealing to me right now. It’s time for a comeback after years of baggy, below the knee and wide shorts. If you’ve been hitting the gym and working the legs, might as well show ’em off.

Mini Check

Mini Check

Chelsea
7th Avenue and 22nd St.

I love a good blue dress shirt. So crisp, so fresh, so summery. The appeal of this one is the gingham pattern in a more subtle, muted, mini version and the contrast of the solid white placket on one side as well as the inside collar.

Slim Chinos

Slim ChinosChelsea

If you work in an office that doesn’t require a suit or a tie, here is a clean, fitted, appropriate, professional outfit that looks good any day of the week. Embrace the slimmer fit and pants that literally hug your legs and then make sure the shirt you pair with it is proportioned to the pants. No billowy, blousy, ill fitting shirts.

Flecks Of Gold

Flecks Of Gold

Penn Station
7th Avenue and 34th St.

The hot, sticky, sweaty days have arrived in the concrete jungle. As evidenced by this gent, you gotta keep dry and sweat free by dabbing. His tattoos and accessories are what really give this fella panache. The goggle-like, thick black frames, the gold watch and tiny gold earring placed mid lobe and backward cap makes him look more downtown than the suburban crush that is Penn Station.

Garrett In Plaid

Flatiron District
5th Avenue and 18th St.

I can’t with Garrett and his Pendleton plaid shirt. I can’t because I want it. I love the one chest pocket and the color. I also like how he sports a henley shirt underneath the plaid and of course the green nautical bracelet.

Fresh White

Fresh White

Flatiron District
5th Avenue and 24th St.

I recently read a quote from a well known menswear designer where he stated that every man should own a white shirt because if you’re tan or dark skinned, it adds amazing contrast and if you’re pale or light skinned it makes you look less so and brings out more color to your face. Wise words and I couldn’t agree more. Oh this gent, I’m digging how the white shirt contrasts the redness in his facial hair.

Nike Socks

Chelsea

Black Nike socks pulled all the way up to the chins is all the rage in the city. I spot so many of them on guys that I could do a whole feature just on that. Truth be told, whenever I go for a run I do have the same socks and wear them constantly.

This is the second day I’m showcasing a pink shirt on a guy to underscore how great it looks. I especially love it paired with a dark or navy suit. A pink shirt is like a white shirt – it just works.

I’m digging the pink, green and grey color scheme this fella has going on. Nice to see plaid on a jacket for a change as opposed to a winter full of solid colored coats.

Lafayette Atkinson on 8th Ave.

Lafayette Atkinson on 8th Ave.

Chelsea
8th Ave. and 17th St.

It was all about the cut, stitching details and how Lafayette’s double breasted coat was fitting to his frame that cemented it for me, not to mention the nice way his collar stood up, the way he wrapped his scarf and the slick, brown/burgundy leather gloves that added a nice pop. Also, slit side chest pockets on a coat are the best invention ever. I have some in my Rag & Bone winter coat and they are the best hand warmers and so convenient to stick my phone in.

The khaki shirt, like khakis themselves have a perfectly relaxed weekend quality about them. It’s a color more associated with pants, that it’s rare to see it on the top. I’ll have to add it to my list.

Flashback Friday: Head Down

Flashback Friday: Head Down

Flatiron District
5th Ave. and 22nd St.

I needed a shot that reminded me of warmer temperatures today since I mentioned in today’s earlier post that it is pretty cold in New York. I chose this guy with his awesome sleeve of tattoos that I captured right before Labor Day last year. I like how the brim of his hat conceals his eyes, but no matter, since you’re still drawn to him. It’s the tats that does it.

Setting The Tone

Forget resolutions in 2014 but question the tone you’d like to set in the new year. Like this gent, I’m interested in being more in command of how I present myself to the world, which is a sign of respect to others around me. Looking your best is a gift to others.

For Jules

For Jules

Chelsea
7th Ave. and 15th St.

I recently re-connected with my old college friend Julie whom I hadn’t seen in a long time. It was like no time had passed at all during our reunion. On one of our recent outings together we spotted this super cool looking dude. That hat, that leather and those shades mixed with the hoodie and tight black jeans cemented the swagger he was pulling off that day and of course Julie was quite enamored by it all so I dedicate this post to her.

Military Peacoat

Miltary Peacoat

Flatiron District

It’s pretty much black coat weather/season this time of year. The streets are blanketed with it. If must wear basic black at least make it a bit stylish with some details like this guy – double breasted, military style, slanted flack pockets, a nice collar and of course a good fit.

Chilly in Chelsea

Chelsea
10th Ave. and 19th St.

I was gallery hopping on a Saturday afternoon in Chelsea and it was frigid out. I was surprised to find this French gentleman sitting outside without a coat working on his laptop. He was a very friendly Frenchie who was all smiles, polite and cheerfully agreed to let me take his picture while he tapped away on his laptop. He even said “my pleasure”. Most of my French friends are the most stylish friends I have, but rarely are they as sunny as this one.

I was with my subject Garrett from the blog (Hi Garrett) when I spotted this fellow. Good thing he was there as I was distracted talking to him and we both saw him and all I remember was Garrett barking at me “get him, get him” with my camera. The consensus between us was that his monk strap shoes were pretty solid, while I personally liked the collar of his four button peacoat and the maroon color of his pants.

Calvin Dutton

Calvin Dutton

West Chelsea
10th Ave. and 27th St.

As I was walking up Tenth Avenue on my way to watch a friend’s football game, I noticed a slew of people unsuccessfully trying to hail cabs as it was that particular time of day when the shift changes. Such a circumstance led me to stumble upon Calvin also making the attempt. I noticed his bright yellow Nike high tops from across the way and dashed traffic to his side of the street to ask to take his photograph which he kindly agreed to. I love the way Calvin mixed his grey top coat with a cool and casual outfit underneath and gave a splash of color with his kicks and they way he rolled up his jeans to give them full exposure. I guess there is an upside to the no cabs quandary we in the city find ourselves in from time to time.

Selfie

Flatiron District

I caught this guy taking a selfie on his phone. The reason I knew it was a selfie and not him taking a picture of something else was because he kept primping, preening and posing with different facial expressions to get it just right. I admire that he did it so openly at such a busy intersection. I guess people also need an audience as well when they take pictures of themselves. But hey, he looks good so it’s all good.

Cavan Valance On The Highline Part 2

Cavan Valance
The Highline

As promised here is Cavan on the Highline, this time wearing his navy shawl collar sweater that preps him up a bit. I noticed that as he was taking the sweater on and off to showcase him against different back drops, his hair kept re-arranging itself which gave him a different look in various shots. I was partial to the look where his hair made him seem slightly boyish; I’ll let you figure out which one that is. We did both agree that our favorite pick was the shot with him sitting down with his shades on, smiling. Even though all of these turned out great, sometimes you gotta have a fave.

Black Jackets

Black Jackets

Midtown West

Yesterday’s post Texture was a great all black ensemble. Today’s post shows how to punch up a black base coat of black with some color and some contrast. The all black look can be sharp, sleek and even tough, but pairing black with different hues makes it more relaxed.

Texture

Flatiron District

It’s all about the detailing of texture here with this fellow’s ensemble. The quilting on his leather jacket, the lining at the knees of his motocross pants and even the netting on his cap are a great way to get playful without overstating or being loud with patterns or prints. His outfit is all black, but with all that texture it saves it from being bland. Digging the white Converse kicks and Gucci belt as well.

Cavan Valance On The Highline

Cavan Valance
The Highline

Cavan and I spent the earlier part of a Sunday afternoon in early November shooting up on the Highline. I was a little wary of choosing that as a location since it has become such a tourist magnet, especially on the weekends, but logistically it was a good place for us to meet. Thankfully it wasn’t as mobbed as I thought it would be since the New York City marathon was taking place that day, so I think most of the crowds convened uptown much to my relief.

As per usual, wherever Cavan goes, there his trusty Martin Little guitar follows. It was put to good use as many of the people that passed us were intrigued to hear him sing his heart out and it was an idyllic setting to hear someone play live music. The shoot and the day felt pretty informal and Cavan dressed appropriately casual. His outfit consisted of a great vintage army jacket that he swiped from one of his brothers, a solid pink oxford button down shirt from Gap, form fitting jeans and a great pair of Ted Baker shoes. He swapped out the green jacket for a grey waist coat and I was surprised how one tiny piece of clothing made him look much more polished and somewhat of rock star in an instant. He also brought along a shall collar sweater that I was tempted to throw on myself since it was windy up there. That sweater can be seen in Monday’s post of him. For now, enjoy the view from the top. Top of the Highline that is.

Please check back on Monday morning for the second part of Cavan on the Highline.

Camel Coat

Camel Coat

Flatiron District
Broadway and 21st St.

Today is the first day I’m breaking out my top coat for fall. In honor of that occasion, I’m posting the first top coat shot I’ve taken this fall. This gent’s is slightly boxy which makes it look and feel more enveloping, a bit like a blanket. The tie of the scarf is excellent as well as are the frames of his glasses. He definitely likes his shades of brown.

Today was a pretty balmy day in New York. I saw coats, blazers, and sweaters all come off in favor of the first layer of clothing. I even saw a few tank tops today! Some people are extremists. This guy is the perfect example of removing the warmer layer to take advantage of warmer weather.

Two Of A Kind

Chelsea

With these fellas, they are both giving us the slim fit, straight leg jean look in a dark shade. On bachelor number one, the shade is navy and he pairs it with a graphic tee, gold watch and sneakers, while on bachelor number two, the shade is a black/blue and he sports it with sunglasses, a short sleeved plaid button down shirt and boots. Two dudes, similar denim, their own unique twist.

Untucked

Untucked

Midtown South
7th Ave. and 28th St.

I was shooting a guy for the blog the other day and he asked me whether he should have his shirt tucked in or untucked. I told him that’s a loaded question because so many factors come into play – the type of shirt, outfit, pant, layering piece you wear with it etc. It’s all about proportions and theme of the outfit. This look is more casual, he’s wearing an everyday pair of jeans, so untucked looks more appropriate.

I found this guy bypassing a slew of open cabs that all stopped to catch him as a fare, only to find that someone was picking him up as they hauled this box into the trunk. Him standing on the street gave me enough time to take a decent amount of shots. This is a great cold day outfit with his toggle coat, hat and scarf. I prefer dressing like this on colder days as opposed to any sort of puffy coat or bubble jacket.

I have the perfect pair of grey jeans from All Saints I bought last summer that I have yet to take to my tailor. I also like his charcoal bomber jacket and how he slides in the color with his green plaid shirt and burgundy boots

Labels, labels, labels. This guy has aplenty.Even his coffee cup has a label. I think when an outfit is more athletic and sport related, there tends to be more of stamp with labels. His bike from Bianchi is pretty stylin’ in the white shade and he got a lot of compliments on it from people passing by.
