Ringleader

Hudson Square
Spring and Varick St.

Jewelry is a very personal thing and just like clothing it can be done well or the opposite. I was struck by how this gent placed his rings at the pinky and ring finger. I used to think that all I needed was a good, solid watch but lately I’ve been adding rings, necklaces, bracelets and switching my pieces up. I’ve come to discover some great, not too expensive jewelry makers for guys and it’s nice to focus on the accessories instead of so heavily on the apparel.

Fresh White

Fresh White

Flatiron District
5th Avenue and 24th St.

I recently read a quote from a well known menswear designer where he stated that every man should own a white shirt because if you’re tan or dark skinned, it adds amazing contrast and if you’re pale or light skinned it makes you look less so and brings out more color to your face. Wise words and I couldn’t agree more. Oh this gent, I’m digging how the white shirt contrasts the redness in his facial hair.

White Polo

White Polo

Hudson Square
Vandam and Varick St.

The long sleeve polo shirt is something I rarely see anymore, but it’s a great spring piece that’s a nice alternative to your basic long sleeve crew neck shirt. I like how this one has a chest pocket.

Printed Tie

Printed Tie

West Village
Varick and Carmine St.

This tie stood out to me because of it’s subtle diamond print and how well the pattern is spaced out on the tie so that it doesn’t look too busy. I also like how it’s a jewel toned color blue against the navy suit.

Black Levi's

SoHo
Prince and Sullivan St.

With all the great premium denim out there from Rag & Bone, to J Brand, to A.P.C. et al., sometimes it’s nice to stick to the tried and true classics like Levi’s. As long as you nail the fit and wash, you’re good to go.

Grunge

Grunge

Upper East Side
68th and Lexington

Back in the early 90’s the term and style of grunge was all the rage. Like all fads, trends, styles and fashions it’s due for an updated comeback. Not that I have seen enough evidence to support a comeback but this guy’s outfit with the loose flannel plaid shirt, baggy shorts and mismatched socks certainly reflects the style.

Red Socks

Red Socks

Lower East Side
Stanton and Chrystie St.

Those sneakers he’s wearing with the heart face are by Play by Comme des Garcons, the cult Japanese label. I like how he matches the heart with a pair of red socks and rolls up his pants to give you all his ankle action.

Just a typical casual Sunday with a sporty dude with the requisite scruff, Yankees cap, hoodie jacket, jeans and sneakers and his lady hailing a cab.

Urban Lumberjack

Urban Lumberjack

NoLIta
Prince and Mulberry St.

I think the title of this post is very apropos. It’s the perfect mix of Maine and Manhattan. Those frames on his face look great and a white henley peeking out from all those cold weather layers is so fresh.

Lafayette Atkinson on 8th Ave.

Lafayette Atkinson on 8th Ave.

Chelsea
8th Ave. and 17th St.

It was all about the cut, stitching details and how Lafayette’s double breasted coat was fitting to his frame that cemented it for me, not to mention the nice way his collar stood up, the way he wrapped his scarf and the slick, brown/burgundy leather gloves that added a nice pop. Also, slit side chest pockets on a coat are the best invention ever. I have some in my Rag & Bone winter coat and they are the best hand warmers and so convenient to stick my phone in.

Lapel Vest

SoHo

This was quite the unique vest this guy was wearing with lapels and all the pockets. I love how thrown together he looks and the small accessory details of his tortoiseshell frames, bracelet, watch and key chain..

Flashback Friday: Awash in Grey

Flashback Friday: Awash in Grey

Lower East Side
Delancey St.

Everyone is talking about how they can’t wait for spring and I couldn’t agree more, but what I find interesting is that there are some guys who dress opposite the season. This guy for example was wearing a wool sweater and hat in the dead heat of summer on a humid day. But I did find his harem sweat pants and wide shawl sweater very funky, so he can do whatever he wants!

Charlie in TriBeCa

Charlie in TriBeCa

TriBeCa
Franklin and Greenwich Ave.

Stumbled upon the very cool and chill Charlie while strolling with my friend Julie in TriBeCa. He had a preppy, hip hop vibe going on with his Air Jordans, two studs in his ears, shirt buttoned all the way and straight brim hat.

Throwback Thursday: Pants Rolled Up

Greenwich Village
7th Ave. South and Bleecker

I love this shot taken in front of the classic Ottomanelli’s meat and butcher shop in the village. The guy I captured in front of it last spring on a very humid May day took matters into his own hands by rolling up his pants to cool off.

Man In The Middle

This is a nice variation on the traditional peacoat with the side zipper. I like the way he winterizes the rest of his look with the hat, fingerless gloves and boots.

Digging this man’s quilted, short, spread collar, grey, snap button coat with two different breast pockets. It’s even better that it matches his grey hair on top.

From Inside

Upper East Side
Dean & Deluca/ 85th and Madison

I was scarfing down a bagel and having an espresso at the Dean & Deluca food shop on the Upper East Side when I realized I was sitting in the perfect corner window to people watch and take pictures. I was off to an appointment so I only managed to get this one shot of this guy adjusting his hood. Not bad for only sitting there a few minutes.

Throwback Thursday: Above The Crowd

Throwback Thursday: Above The Crowd

SoHo
Prince and Mercer St.

This guy’s height alone made him tower over the typical Saturday afternoon crowds in SoHo. This was taken last spring on one of the first really warm days after the winter which is something I’m jonesing for. I love a great fitted, simple grey sweatshirt-like crewneck like his. It’s one of my uniform pieces in my wardrobe and is worn as such.

The khaki shirt, like khakis themselves have a perfectly relaxed weekend quality about them. It’s a color more associated with pants, that it’s rare to see it on the top. I’ll have to add it to my list.

Flashback Friday: Crisp White Tee

Flashback Friday: Crisp White Tee SoHo
Blue Ribbon

With all this talk of a Polar Vortex engulfing much of the U.S. and Canada, I’m reminded of simpler days of the summer where the only layer you need is a solid tee. A simple, classic white t-shirt is a wardrobe staple. I like the way he pairs it with blue chinos, blue vans and even his bike is blue. I noticed him right outside Blue Ribbon restaurant right up the street from my apartment last summer. Look close and you can see my reflection in the glass.

Leather Bomber

Leather Bomber

Chinatown
Grand and Elizabeth St.

I wonder if his leather jacket is vintage or not. A lot of brands nowadays like to give their clothes that worn-in, old, vintage-y look. Some are successful at it while other brands make it look studied. Or I could be wrong altogether and he purchased it new and had years of wear and tear to give it that lived in look which is how I feel most leather jackets should look.

The Trinity

This was a bit of a miracle shot to get all three of these very stylish guys aligned and unobstructed as they were crossing the street. All three of them are nailing their own individual look with such nonchalance. They’re all very inspiring.

Hoodie Shirt Jacket

Another hybrid in the form of a shirt jacket with a hood. He has all sorts of variants of grey in his outfit but breaks it up with some red, white and blue in his crewneck shirt. I’m digging the classic Adidas shell toe sneakers.

For Jules

For Jules

Chelsea
7th Ave. and 15th St.

I recently re-connected with my old college friend Julie whom I hadn’t seen in a long time. It was like no time had passed at all during our reunion. On one of our recent outings together we spotted this super cool looking dude. That hat, that leather and those shades mixed with the hoodie and tight black jeans cemented the swagger he was pulling off that day and of course Julie was quite enamored by it all so I dedicate this post to her.

Mixed Plaids

As a huge lover of plaid this shirt has my name written all over it. I’m dying over the mixture of plaids merged into one shirt, from the torso to the pockets and the sleeves – it’s a great shirt that I covet.

Happy Holidays to all my faithful viewers and followers. My blog is about style, but it’s also about the love of people. I owe a lot of thanks to all the guys I encounter and meet on the streets and all the people who like to see how I capture them and who take the time to read my posts. This blog wouldn’t exist without your help!

Coffee & Briefcase

Greenwich Village

Love the way this guy is two fisting it in the more professional manner with a coffee and briefcase from Jack Spade. It’s common sense and somewhat of an unwritten style rule, but blue and brown are two of the best colors to pair together that compliment each other well.

Unzipped Boots

Unzipped Boots

Lower Manhattan
City Hall

Not only did this fellow have his jeans tucked into his boots, but the boots themselves were zipped all the way down so that the top half flopped around. A unique way to anchor the look to say the least. I’ve also never seen a quilted jacket like his with lapels instead of the standard stand up collar or hood.

Coat less

Coat less

TriBeCa
Warren and West Broadway

It’s pretty cold out in New York, but even with the frigid temperatures, you’ll always find the guy who defies the weather and puts style over comfort. It was interesting to note that most of the people walking by him and surrounding him were bundled in heavy black and/or puffy coats but he stood out.

Miltary Peacoat

It’s pretty much black coat weather/season this time of year. The streets are blanketed with it. If must wear basic black at least make it a bit stylish with some details like this guy – double breasted, military style, slanted flack pockets, a nice collar and of course a good fit.

Throwback Thursday: Fur Shawl

When I began compiling pictures for the blog last winter, this was one of the first guys I shot. No matter what your attitude towards fur, you can understand why I was immediately drawn to his coat and collar. The color combo itself deserves a thumbs up.

This is the type of outfit I would wear on my day off or walking around the city running my errands. I have way too many plaid shirts for my own good, but whatever, I look good in all of them. This guy is perfectly encapsulating how to be laid back, cool and casual.

Yesterday’s post Clean Lines was just one example of how I would dress and here’s yet another example of an outfit that would suit me. What can I say? I love my blues, greys, shawl collars, button downs and dark denim.  I’ll also take brown footwear any day of the week.

This gentleman is my style twin. I even own the exact pair of J.Crew suede boots he’s wearing. Give me monochromatic in different shades, a good pair of sunglasses and jeans and some decent boots and I’m good to go. I like to keep it clean, simple and effortless just like my twin.

Black Nylon

Sometimes describing a look as very “downtown” can sound so arbitrary. Yet at other times that phrasing can also hit the nail on the head. I’d say it’s applicable here with this fellow and the typical use of words in reference to downtown style – hip, cool, urbane. A spade is just a spade sometimes as well.

Today is the first day I’m breaking out my top coat for fall. In honor of that occasion, I’m posting the first top coat shot I’ve taken this fall. This gent’s is slightly boxy which makes it look and feel more enveloping, a bit like a blanket. The tie of the scarf is excellent as well as are the frames of his glasses. He definitely likes his shades of brown.

Two Of A Kind

Chelsea

With these fellas, they are both giving us the slim fit, straight leg jean look in a dark shade. On bachelor number one, the shade is navy and he pairs it with a graphic tee, gold watch and sneakers, while on bachelor number two, the shade is a black/blue and he sports it with sunglasses, a short sleeved plaid button down shirt and boots. Two dudes, similar denim, their own unique twist.

I’m a fan of a long sleeved button down shirt where you flip the cuffs and it displays a different pattern or print. On his shirt I also notice the subtle detail of the plaid on his chest pocket and placket in a diagonal direction. It’s a small detail but it saves the shirt from being just another plaid shirt.
