Square Shades

Square Shades
West Village
Greewnwich Avenue and 11th St.

I’m digging the shape of these sunglasses. I’m partial to my classic Gucci aviators which cost a fortune but I’ve had for many years. It was because of seeing these shades that lit the spark to branch out and find a different shape. So far, the search has proved to be fruitless and I’m not a cheap sunglasses type of guy, but at least now I have a reference for what appeals to me.

Fur Trimmed Hood

Fur Trimmed Hood

Greenwich Village
Greenwich Ave. and Christopher St.

There’s something about that fur hood that makes his Canada Goose coat way more appealing. I probably would not have taken his picture without it. It’s what is known as a deal breaker in the picture selection process 🙂

Military Peacoat

Miltary Peacoat

Flatiron District
Broadway and 23rd St.

It’s pretty much black coat weather/season this time of year. The streets are blanketed with it. If must wear basic black at least make it a bit stylish with some details like this guy – double breasted, military style, slanted flack pockets, a nice collar and of course a good fit.

Black Jackets

Black Jackets

Midtown West
Columbus Circle

Yesterday’s post Texture was a great all black ensemble. Today’s post shows how to punch up a black base coat of black with some color and some contrast. The all black look can be sharp, sleek and even tough, but pairing black with different hues makes it more relaxed.

Throwback Thursday: Actor Dean Winters

Throwback Thursday: Actor Dean Winters

SoHo
Broome Street

I captured the great character actor Dean Winters strolling so freely around the corner from my apartment. I’ve actually been spotting him for years in SoHo, but I never had a blog back then, so it’s fitting that my latest encounter with him last summer be featured here. Do you have a favorite Dean Winters role? I’ve loved him in Sex and the City as Carrie’s fuck buddy (that’s the first time I’ve used the f word on the blog :)), Liz Lemon’s ex-boyfriend, Duffy on 30 Rock and even as the advertising character “Mayhem” in the All State insurance commercials. Ultimately though I will always choose him as Ryan O’Reilly in HBO’s cult prison drama OZ. If you haven’t already, I suggest a binge viewing of that show. Here, he rocks the all black look and I love how he’s without sunglasses, bags and not holding a phone. Go Ryan! I mean Dean. Lol

Men in Black

Men in Black

Nolita
Prince and Mulberry St.

I couldn’t resist the play on words as it seemed to be very apropos. I found these two to be quite identical yet very individual at the same time. Just goes to show that no matter how uniform a look, each guy can make it his own.

I like how the wording on his t-shirt is modeled after the Superman logo, naturally 🙂

Midnight Blue

Midnight Blue

TriBeCa
West Broadway and White St.

This guy could have gone black all the way, but his dark blue shirt gives his outfit just a hint of contrast. I like how he prefers all dark colors in his outfit, but his phone is white. Also liking the shine of his shoes and cuff of his pants.

OBEY Flying Lotus T-Shirt

OBEY Flying Lotus T-Shirt

West Chelsea
10th Ave. and 26th St.

OBEY Clothing is the street wear label created by fine artist/graphic designer Shepard Fairey, who illustrated the infamous “Hope” poster of president Barack Obama. I see his logo on guys all over New York, usually on skater guys wearing OBEY hats.  I was happy to come across a guy wearing the label’s flying lotus tee, as it’s one of my favorite designs of the label.

Black Tank

Black Tank

SoHo

Thanks to all who commented and liked the parade of guys in tanks this past week. One last tank shot to close out the summer. Until next tank season.

Tuesday Tank

Leggings

Union Square
Broadway and 18th St.

Sweat drenched on his tank and a head full of slick wet hair. The kind of look that can only be achieved by a good workout and getting the heart rate up. I’m liking the shorts over leggings look as well.

Man At Work 2

Hell’s Kitchen
Hudson Hotel

A couple of weeks ago, I posted a picture entitled Man At Work (see link below), which proved to be quite popular. On another stroll past the Hudson Hotel, I caught a different worker, looking just as well put together. No need for a competition, but you can decide for yourself  who you prefer in the work uniform. Although this guy’s haircut is a bit more unique.

Black With A Touch Of Brown

Black With A Touch Of Brown

Chelsea
Seventh Ave.

I love when the all black look gets played during the summer months. It’s hard to come by this time of year with whites, pastels, neons and light colors dominating the streets, but he gives all black credibility in these warmer months. Also like his fitted yet slouchy jeans.

Man At Work

Man At Work

Hell’s Kitchen
Hudson Hotel

I enjoy catching people in the act of doing their jobs. One of the doormen at The Hudson Hotel in midtown, seen here, grabbing cabs for hotel guests in his uniform of black shirt, dark jeans, two-way radio and casual, relaxed attitude on the job. Don’t forget to tip your doorman.

Nothing But The Clothes On His Back

Nothing But The Clothes On His Back

TriBeCa
Varick and Beach St.

No iPhone, no smartphone, no cell phone, no earphones, no headphones, no jewelry, no watch, no sunglasses, no eyeglasses, no accessories, no hat, no bag, no backpack, no gym bag, no shopping bag, no water bottle, no coffee cup, no book, no iPad, no dog, no excess. This guy literally has nothing but the clothes on his back and it looks amazing. Travel light, travel far I say.

In New York, we tend to carry around so much stuff on our daily travels, so how refreshing to see someone so unencumbered with nothing but his confidence and swagger. I always feel my best walking around the city with no accoutrements to weigh me down because people should notice me, not things that distract them from me. I see a lot of people throwing on all kinds of things to get noticed and to be looked at, but if you have confidence, you don’t need anything but that to grab people’s attention. That is the ultimate attention grabber. Less really is more.

All Black and Slick

TriBeCa
TriBeCa Grand Hotel

It’s interesting to see people doing their jobs in the city and if they look good doing it, all the better. I noticed the doorman of this hotel trying to hail a cab for a guest and good thing for me he was out there a while with no luck, as a lot of cabs were taken or off duty because I was able to get a few shots of him. That is some mighty slick hair he’s sporting matched with his all black ensemble. My favorite part is the big, oversize scarf he’s wearing and the way he ties it. It has the proportions of a mini blanket. I definitely gotta get me one of those next winter.
