White V-Neck

White V-Neck
Lower East Side
Essex and Rivington

There’s clearly nothing flashy or over the top about this outfit. This is as classic casual as it gets with a simple white v-neck tee, with a grey t-shirt underneath and some solid, loose, but not baggy khakis. Add some great hair, a little stubble, solid shoes and nothing overpowers the guy in the threads. It’s all in the subtlety.

Mad Hatter

Mad Hatter

West Village
Greenwich Ave and 10th St.

How nice to see a proper hat in sea of baseball caps. His accessories game is pretty tight with this ensemble and he’s even sporting some colored nails.

Mankles

No Socks And Loafers

Greenwich Village
Thompson and Houston St.

I was reading an article today in New York magazine about the term mankles (http://nymag.com/thecut/2014/05/men-throw-out-your-socks-its-mankles-season.html) – referring to the time of year when it’s not quite as hot outside for shorts, but men want to feel the sun on the lower part of their bodies, so they roll up their pants to reveal their ankles. That or have pants that are short enough to reveal them already. It is an erogenous zone and showing them off via pants can be much more attractive than seeing nice legs in unsightly, baggy, ill-fitting cargo shorts.

TriBeCa Ride

TriBeCa Ride

TriBeCa
Greenwich and Franklin St.

That striped sweater he’s wearing just looks and feels like spring. Maybe because he’s not wearing a jacket or maybe because he pairs it with khakis or maybe because the sweater has lighter shades or maybe it’s all of the above.

Cuffed

Cuffed

East Village
Third Ave and 12th St.

I’m a fan of a long sleeved button down shirt where you flip the cuffs and it displays a different pattern or print. On his shirt I also notice the subtle detail of the plaid on his chest pocket and placket in a diagonal direction. It’s a small detail but it saves the shirt from being just another plaid shirt.

Joe Coffee

Joe's Coffee

West Village
Waverly Place

This post is more about my love for Joe Coffee in the West Village than it is about style. I conducted an interview there the other day and was happy to learn that they finally accept credit and debit cards instead of cash only, which has been the case since its inception. So to spot a guy with a Joe’s cup, strolling down Waverly by the subway is a very New York shot to me.

Suede Boots

Suede Boots

SoHo
Mercer St.

Tan, suede desert boots are so right up my alley. I could wear them with everything, even shorts. His are a great color and I like how he keeps them slightly open for a more casual, loose look.

Fitted Denim Jacket

Fitted Denim Jacket

Greenwich Village
6th Ave. and Houston St.

I like when a denim jacket is so fitted that when you button up the top few buttons, it creates a v formation opening the rest of the way down, precisely as this guy demonstrates with his jacket.

This guy is owning his preppy casual look and owning the street as well.

Leg Cross

Leg Cross

TriBeCa
West Broadway

This is the exact same stance and pose I strike whenever I lean up on wall with my shoulder. For me this guy is all about the subtle details – the buckle and looseness of his belt, the slick of his hair and preppy eyeglasses and of course that all too familiar wall lean.

Uptown/Downtown

Uptown/Downtown

East Village
1st Ave. and 1st St.

In the episode “The Maid” on the sitcom Seinfeld, the character Kramer finds himself in a “long distance” relationship with Jerry’s maid. He lives uptown on the UWS, she lives downtown and he finds himself lost and perplexed at the corner of 1st and 1st, that he refers to as the nexus of the universe, which is where I fittingly found this guy with his Uptown hat, at this very downtown location.

Printed Polo

Printed Polo

Upper West Side

In honor of Columbus Day, here’s a shot I took near the Columbus statue in Columbus Circle. The print on his polo shirt has a tropical vibe. Nice detail of his scrunched up pants to reveal his boots.

It’s refreshing to see someone’s head buried in an actual book rather than an smartphone or iPad. He looks very dapper enjoying his solitude.

Waiting On The Corner

Waiting On The Corner

West Village
Corner Bistro

Corner Bistro is one of the best burger joints in the city. I found this guy waiting for a date at – where else – the corner.  The second wait comes when you get inside and have to wait in line. His colored t-shirt made him stand out.

Leather & Denim

Leather & Denim

Lower East Side
Hester Street

It’s starting to finally feel like fall in New York with the weather turning crisp. Bring on the jackets and sweaters. These two guys are fall ready with their fitted jackets in leather and denim. I particularly love the wash and fade of the Levi’s denim jacket on the right.

The White Shirt

The White Shirt

Greenwich Village
MacDougal St. and Minetta Lane

The iconic, classic white shirt. A staple. Seasonless. So crisp, clean and fresh. It brightens up any man and immediately makes him look pulled together. That is the power of the white shirt.

Fall Blazer Days

Fall Blazer Days

TriBeCa
6th Ave. and Lispenard

This guy’s look is cool for the mix. The blazer dresses things up and he adds a dash of color and personality with his pocket square, but he’s also cool and casual with his NY Giants cap, boots, pants slightly rolled up and a bit preppy with his chinos and button down shirt. The look feels like fall.

Car Pose

SoHo

It’s all about the way he leans on the car and poses against it – forget driving it.

Rolled Up

West Chelsea
10th Ave. and 29th St.

This guy is all about the rolls – his t-shirt and his pants. I like his choice of putting blue and green together, with his cream colored high tops. I’m rarely a pattern or prints guy, except when it comes to plaid, so I can appreciate solid blocks of color.

Purple Dress Shirt

Purple Dress Shirt

If we’re going to be accurate, the shirt color is more lavender than purple. Don’t be afraid of the word lavender guys, since you can see it looks great.

Beige

City Safari

SoHo
Broome and Thompson Sts.

Tan, khaki, beige. It’s all different words for describing the light brown hue, of which this gent sports it, via his shorts and shoes. I like how he offsets it with a white short sleeved button down shirt with the sleeves rolled up. This is a great summer combo.

Ankle Focus

Ankle Focus

Upper East Side
Central Park

This duo is all about what’s happening below the chins. From two tone shoes, to patterned socks and rolled up cuffs, these guys show how to make ankles stylish without being so obvious about it. Also like how they mix solid colors, with each having the contrast of one light color against a darker color.

Blue Plaid

Greenwich Village
Washington Square Park

I own a closet full of plaid button shirts in all variations of the pattern from dressy to casual.  I like this guy’s loose, undone, relaxed quality with his shirt untucked, but not too long and although his khakis have a sharp crease, he also wears his pants with a bit of swag.  Also, notice his hand in a cast, which somehow makes him look cooler. Funny how that works 🙂

Dressy Polo

Dressy Polo

TriBeCa
Greenwich and Warren St.

What I found so intriguing with this polo shirt, was that I took this shot in TriBeCa on a Saturday afternoon, with a sea of guys walking around in their lazy, weekend uniform of baggy polo shirts,  oversize cargo shorts and flip flops, but this guy looked so much more polished with his fitted polo, decent pants and suede loafers. And guys, take note; I noticed a lot of women check him out as opposed to the other fellows. Women respond to a well dressed man!

Perfectly Pale

This guy’s outfit is great with its pale shades and is kept in balance with his dark hair and dark Converse Chuck Taylors. I also noticed his small, delicate tattoo on his hand.

Boys Will Be Boys

Boys Will Be Boys

West Village
Greenwich Ave. and Perry St.

A couple of guys having lunch on a bench and everything is halted when a beautiful woman comes their way. Yes, this is how we men operate when we see something desirable, in a word – distracted! Notice how these two are in practical unison each cupping a sandwich with both hands, beverages on the ground between their legs, mid-chew and both staring up at the Louis Vuitton clad female approaching. Clothes wise they’re both even sporting colored khakis, button down shirts and watches.

North TriBeCa I Love You

North TriBeCa I Love You

TriBeCa
Greenwich and DesBrosses St.

North TriBeCa is considered a micro-neighborhood; that is a small ‘hood within a larger neighborhood. This is one of my favorite micro-hoods. It is so because the streets are cobblestoned, there’s not much traffic, it’s not too crowded or dense, it’s quiet, it’s right by the Hudson River and it has amazing, albeit expensive real estate. New York has so many neighborhoods that are bustling all the time, so this enclave is a refreshing alternative. It’s very civilized.

It was nice to see this great looking couple strolling down Greenwich St. For the guy, his clothes are a great fit to his body and frame. Having your clothes tailored or fitted to your body makes them look more expensive whether that is the case or not. I’m one of those guys that gets everything from suits to t-shirts taken in. His green t-shirt is a nice shade and blends in with the wall behind him. He’s got some nice slick hair, simple jewelry, rolled up cuffs from his khakis and bright sneakers to stand out a bit. Everything with him is in the details.
