Weekday Weekend

Slow Week 054 copy
NoHo
Lafayette and Great Jones St.

Having a day off during the week can feel like you’re on holiday. Walking around the streets you get a sense of others who are in the same position, running errands, leisurely reading in coffee shops, walking dogs etc. But mostly it’s the sense that you can dress down a bit, like this fella sporting the athletic-preppy-day off look.

Flecks Of Gold

Flecks Of Gold

Penn Station
7th Avenue and 34th St.

The hot, sticky, sweaty days have arrived in the concrete jungle. As evidenced by this gent, you gotta keep dry and sweat free by dabbing. His tattoos and accessories are what really give this fella panache. The goggle-like, thick black frames, the gold watch and tiny gold earring placed mid lobe and backward cap makes him look more downtown than the suburban crush that is Penn Station.

Fresh White

Fresh White

Flatiron District
5th Avenue and 24th St.

I recently read a quote from a well known menswear designer where he stated that every man should own a white shirt because if you’re tan or dark skinned, it adds amazing contrast and if you’re pale or light skinned it makes you look less so and brings out more color to your face. Wise words and I couldn’t agree more. Oh this gent, I’m digging how the white shirt contrasts the redness in his facial hair.

Winter Jock

Winter Jock

TriBeCa

Rocking a baseball hat, basketball under one hand and skateboard beneath his feet. All play is a lot of work.

Citibike Cruise

Citibike Cruise

Lower Manhattan
World Trade Center

This guy wasn’t even riding his Citibike, but rather standing on the pedals as he let it cruise down a slope hurtling towards me. However he rides the bike, I’m guessing he was he coming or going towards some sort of workout based on the way he’s dressed.

A Pair of Red Wings

A Pair of Red Wings

Greenwich Village
Thompson and Bleecker

Red Wing boots are functional and stylish at the same time and are simply a great winter boot period. I wouldn’t even mind if a friend of mine was wearing his at the same time. Not into the twins look, but for Red Wings I’d make an exception.

Charlie in TriBeCa

Charlie in TriBeCa

TriBeCa
Franklin and Greenwich Ave.

Stumbled upon the very cool and chill Charlie while strolling with my friend Julie in TriBeCa. He had a preppy, hip hop vibe going on with his Air Jordans, two studs in his ears, shirt buttoned all the way and straight brim hat.

Sporty Bomber

Sporty Bomber

West Village
Hudson and Morton St.

I spotted this guy while sitting across the street in the West Village with his girlfriend. Classic Air Jordans, a straight brim baseball hat and bomber jacket with logo all adds up to a sporty, casual look on a Saturday afternoon

Texture

Texture

Flatiron District
5th Ave. and 23rd St.

It’s all about the detailing of texture here with this fellow’s ensemble. The quilting on his leather jacket, the lining at the knees of his motocross pants and even the netting on his cap are a great way to get playful without overstating or being loud with patterns or prints. His outfit is all black, but with all that texture it saves it from being bland. Digging the white Converse kicks and Gucci belt as well.

Sunday Morning Coffee Run

Sunday Morning Coffee Run

West Village
West 4th and 12th St.

I took this shot early Sunday morning on my way to a breakfast meeting. What I love about his look is that it’s the perfect casual weekend day look. He didn’t step out of his apartment to grab coffee in some lazy sweats or worse, pajamas. He still made the effort to look put together but in a relaxed sort of way. It feels thrown together without much thought or effort for a Sunday morning errand, but it still manages to look presentable and not sloppy or slovenly.

Rolling Stones Tee

Rolling Stones Tee

Chelsea
9th Ave. and 20th St.

What can I say? I’m a sucker for a Rolling Stones t-shirt. Love that band and their logo. Any guy who wears or owns one is okay in my book.

Gold Bar

Gold Bar

Little Italy
Gold Bar

Everyone who’s visited club/lounge/bar Gold Bar has an opinion about the place; see Yelp reviews, but here, the nightlife venue plays background to the guy sitting in front of it. His arms full of tats were what won me over.

Fall Blazer Days

Fall Blazer Days

TriBeCa
6th Ave. and Lispenard

This guy’s look is cool for the mix. The blazer dresses things up and he adds a dash of color and personality with his pocket square, but he’s also cool and casual with his NY Giants cap, boots, pants slightly rolled up and a bit preppy with his chinos and button down shirt. The look feels like fall.

Saturday Tank

Saturday Tank

Chelsea
7th Ave. and 20th St.

I have a fondness for this tank shirt because it advertises the logo of the volunteer organization New York Cares, which I used to volunteer for, until I moved to another organization. I always liked their logo and colors. As a workout outfit goes, I like how he puts it all together.

Tank Week

Equinox

SoHo
Equinox SoHo

As the summer winds down (I go by the official date of Sept 21st. None of this after Labor day nonsense), I decided to do a theme of tank tops this week to say goodbye to the long, hot days in the city. First up, a crisp, white, athletic tank on a guy post workout, chilling on the steps of Equinox gym in Soho.

Yankees Cap

Yankees Cap

Chelsea
8th Ave. and 14th St.

I captured a classic, clean cut, sporty, all American look with this fellow. Blue jeans, a simple, white, pocket t-shirt and a New York Yankees cap with the brim slightly curved. This is what I refer to as no-brainer style.

Court Action

Court Action

Lower East Side
Chrystie St. Courts

The Basketball courts at Sara Delano Roosevelt Park are a great place to watch pick up games. Street ball in the city is a classic New York staple. Although these courts aren’t as intense and competitive as the West Fourth Courts (The Cage) in the Village, they have their own flavor and attract a more playful, neighborhood vibe.

Mix & Match

Mix & Match

Greenwich Village
6th Ave. and Downing St.

What I found interesting with this outfit was that his top half of plaid shirt and hat looked casual, while his bottom half of work out shorts and sneakers looked athletic. Two for the price of one.  A combination I would never have thought of, but he pulls it off.  Great to see inventive merging.

L.A. In NYC

L.A. in NYC

TriBeCa
West Broadway and Warren St.

This guy has  an urbanite L.A. look.  Along with his L.A. Dodgers cap, he’s got the look and feel of  the Southern Cali vibe.  I love how his daughter is wearing his hoodie because she’s cold and how oversize it looks on her.  His shirt is actually from a New York based company, Saturdays Surf that makes cool beach/surf inspired clothes but for an urban setting as well. Their store on Crosby Street is one of my favorite places to shop and they have that amazing back garden where you can sit and drink a beverage from their little coffee shop at the front.

White Tank

White Tank

Flatiron District
5th Ave. and 23rd St.

The street island of tables and chairs directly in front of the Flatiron building is great for people watching. I could sit there all day and snap pics, but for variety sake, I like to mix things up. I found this guy soaking up the sun on one of the first hot days in the city with his exposed arms via his tank top. Look closely and you can see a bit of his tattoo on his shoulder.

Only In New York

Only In New York

TriBeCa
Church and Murray St.

Hailing a cab while holding a bright object of art, carrying a Louis Vuitton duffel bag, wearing camoflogue shorts, athletic wear and a baseball cap. Seemingly random, but he makes the mish mash work.

Crowd Spotted

Crowd Spotted

Upper East Side
Metropolitan Museum of Art

Certain areas of New York are prime for crowds and people watching. The steps of The Met definitely qualify.  I was sitting on the steps for a good while before anything caught my eye. I guess because hordes of tourists aren’t particularly the most stylish, so it’s great to capture the few who are and who stand out amidst the crowd.  I spotted this guy with his cool oval shaped shades, double breast pocket button down and backwards cap and simple wrist wear of bracelets.  He looks very cosmopolitan and would look good in any major city.

Blue Camo

Blue Camo

NoLIta
Prince between Mulberry and Mott St.

I never thought of myself as a camouflage kind of guy. Well there was that one brief spell in the mid-aughts when I fell victim to that trend when it was all the rage, but ever since, I thought I retired that look. After seeing this guy and his cool camo blazer/shirt jacket hybrid in blue with a subtle pattern, I may have to re-think my thoughts on camo.
