Cardigan

Cardigan

SoHo
Thompson and Broome St.

Today felt like the first hint of fall with a slightly cool breeze that warranted a light jacket or sweater. I like this time of year when you can still wear t-shirts, but have that one extra layer like a jacket or sweater and keep it unbuttoned or unzipped. For me, it’s an open cardigan all the way.

Well Cut

Cut Well

Chelsea
8th Avenue and 18th St.

I’ve been helping an acquaintance who works in finance with some wardrobe styling and personal shopping. He practically lives in suits six days a week. When we tackled his closet, he had amazing suits, good taste and quality but the fit and cut were all wrong. Before we even did a lick of shopping, I had him take all of his suits to his tailor to fit and mold them to his frame. A month later when he got them back he realized just how wrong he was in sizing and now he actually enjoys wearing the suits, gets tons of compliments and feels much more confident in them.

First Day Of Spring

First Day Of Spring

Greenwich Village
MacDougal and 8th St.

There seems to be a palpable, collective sigh of relief in the air that spring is finally here, although the weather has yet to catch up, but no matter as long as it’s official. I’m so ready for the days of dressing without a coat or jacket and just wearing a sweater or crewneck like this fellow and being outside more.

Coffee & Cigarettes

Coffee & Cigarettes

SoHo
Prince and Crosby St.

The ultimate break time combo – caffeine and nicotine on display here. The aqua green color of his printed shirt, grey jeans and tan boots are another great combo.

Green Plaid Jacket

Green Plaid Jacket

Midtown
Park Ave. and 49th St.

I’m digging the pink, green and grey color scheme this fella has going on. Nice to see plaid on a jacket for a change as opposed to a winter full of solid colored coats.

Flashback Friday: Awash in Grey

Flashback Friday: Awash in Grey

Lower East Side
Delancey St.

Everyone is talking about how they can’t wait for spring and I couldn’t agree more, but what I find interesting is that there are some guys who dress opposite the season. This guy for example was wearing a wool sweater and hat in the dead heat of summer on a humid day. But I did find his harem sweat pants and wide shawl sweater very funky, so he can do whatever he wants!

TriBeCa Dads

TriBeCa Dads

TriBeCa

This couple had some nice tied scarf action both happening around their necks.I can never make my scarves look this good. They should give lessons.

Lessons From A Collar

Lessons From A Collar

SoHo
6th Ave. and Vandam St.

I was consulting a friend the other day about clothes in his closest and when he put on his pea coat I suggested he turn the collar up. When he looked in the mirror he couldn’t believe what a difference it made and how much cooler it made him and the coat look. I’m going to send him this shot to give him another example.

Silver

Silver

West Village
7th Ave. and 12th St.

Digging this man’s quilted, short, spread collar, grey, snap button coat with two different breast pockets. It’s even better that it matches his grey hair on top.

Belstaff

Belstaff

SoHo
Spring and Thompson St.

Belstaff is the classic British brand best known for their waterproof jackets. It is a great heritage brand that has been acquired by the Italians and recently re-branded itself to create a sexier, jet-set vibe with the designer Martin Cooper at the helm. This quilted jacket with the stand up collar is evidence that it has lost some of its stodgy presentation.

Throwback Thursday: Above The Crowd

Throwback Thursday: Above The Crowd

SoHo
Prince and Mercer St.

This guy’s height alone made him tower over the typical Saturday afternoon crowds in SoHo. This was taken last spring on one of the first really warm days after the winter which is something I’m jonesing for. I love a great fitted, simple grey sweatshirt-like crewneck like his. It’s one of my uniform pieces in my wardrobe and is worn as such.

Man in Background

Man in Background

Nolita
Cafe Gitane

The woman in the foreground with the bright lips is my great friend Ann Yee (http://www.annyeecollection.com/), a very talented womenswear knitwear designer who I was out having Sunday brunch with. In the background is one of many stylish guys or persons in general you can find at Cafe Gitane in Nolita any day of the week. Another great four pocket jacket and grey jeans is a solid choice.

The Trinity

The Trinity

Greenwich Village
6th Ave. and Bleecker St.

This was a bit of a miracle shot to get all three of these very stylish guys aligned and unobstructed as they were crossing the street. All three of them are nailing their own individual look with such nonchalance. They’re all very inspiring.

Hoodie Shirt Jacket

Hoodie Shirt Jacket

Nolita
Houston and Elizabeth St.

Another hybrid in the form of a shirt jacket with a hood. He has all sorts of variants of grey in his outfit but breaks it up with some red, white and blue in his crewneck shirt. I’m digging the classic Adidas shell toe sneakers.

Matching Hat

Matching Hat

SoHo
Crosby St.

A hat person, I am not, but I always admire guys on the street who wear them well and make them look cool such a this guy. Here he matches his hat to his shirt but there is this nice offset with the wild pattern, seemingly paint splattered and colored sneakers. The one rip in his jeans on the knee, also seems to be strategically placed.

Coat less

Coat less

TriBeCa
Warren and West Broadway

It’s pretty cold out in New York, but even with the frigid temperatures, you’ll always find the guy who defies the weather and puts style over comfort. It was interesting to note that most of the people walking by him and surrounding him were bundled in heavy black and/or puffy coats but he stood out.

Military Peacoat

Miltary Peacoat

Flatiron District
Broadway and 23rd St.

It’s pretty much black coat weather/season this time of year. The streets are blanketed with it. If must wear basic black at least make it a bit stylish with some details like this guy – double breasted, military style, slanted flack pockets, a nice collar and of course a good fit.

Well Suited

Well Suited

SoHo
Broome and Thompson St.

A polka dot tie and a pinstripe suit make for one of my favorite combos. I think a suit should be well tailored yet playful as this guy demonstrates.

Calvin Dutton

Calvin Dutton

West Chelsea
10th Ave. and 27th St.

As I was walking up Tenth Avenue on my way to watch a friend’s football game, I noticed a slew of people unsuccessfully trying to hail cabs as it was that particular time of day when the shift changes. Such a circumstance led me to stumble upon Calvin also making the attempt. I noticed his bright yellow Nike high tops from across the way and dashed traffic to his side of the street to ask to take his photograph which he kindly agreed to. I love the way Calvin mixed his grey top coat with a cool and casual outfit underneath and gave a splash of color with his kicks and they way he rolled up his jeans to give them full exposure. I guess there is an upside to the no cabs quandary we in the city find ourselves in from time to time.

Squint

Squint

NoHo
Lafayette and Great Jones St.

Somebody get this guy some shades. Aside from his lack of sun protection, what he does have going for him is those hefty Red Wing boots which are the perfect combination of rugged yet urban. They are easily identifiable from their signature rusty brown/orange hue.

Grey Cardigan

Grey Cardigan

Lower East Side
Allen and Rivington

Yesterday’s post Clean Lines was just one example of how I would dress and here’s yet another example of an outfit that would suit me. What can I say? I love my blues, greys, shawl collars, button downs and dark denim.  I’ll also take brown footwear any day of the week.

Electric Blue

Electric Blue

SoHo
Spring and Sullivan St.

I don’t even like hats or electric blue for that matter, so why do I now want one after seeing how well this guy wears his? Such is the inspiration I see on other guys that gets me to change my mind. Never say never is the lesson here.

Grey Denim

Grey Denim

Union Square
17th St. and Broadway

I have the perfect pair of grey jeans from All Saints I bought last summer that I have yet to take to my tailor. After stopping this guy to take his picture with his nice slim pair, hopefully it will light a fire under me to check it off my to do list. I also like his charcoal bomber jacket and how he slides in the color with his green plaid shirt and burgundy boots

Grey is a neutral that I love. I like to pair it with color. The coloring here comes from his skin tone and his tattoo.

Kept In Check

Grey Plaid Blazer

Upper West Side
72nd and Broadway

I like how he takes this blazer in grey plaid to punch up a very common look of shirt and jeans. Nothing like a little lift to elevate an outfit. This is also my second post of catching a guy with the rarity of earrings. Maybe they’re making a comeback.

Handsome Is As Handsome Does

One Stripe Tie

TriBeCa
Walker and West Broadway

This guy has sort of a Clark Kent/Superman thing going on with the square jaw, suit and eyeglasses. I think his tie does it for me, with one black diagonal stripe against the muted plaid and the grey/black contrast. Handsome tie for a handsome fellow.

In The Hood

In The Hood

Chelsea
9th Ave. and 22nd St.

The way he was wearing his hoodie seemed less functional and more about style. He could have very well been cold, but something tells me this was more about looking good, which he accomplished.

What can I say? I’m a sucker for a Rolling Stones t-shirt. Love that band and their logo. Any guy who wears or owns one is okay in my book.

Plaid Shirt Jacket

Plaid Shirt Jacket

SoHo
West Broadway and Prince St.

I’m surprised I don’t own a shirt and jacket hybrid. It’s the perfect combo and the fact that his is plaid, makes it even more appealing. Maybe I just haven’t encountered the right one. Clothes to me is like attraction – you’ll know it when you see it. You can’t always go looking for it.

Side Part

Side Part

Lower East Side
Bowery St.

Ever since Don Draper from the show Mad Men made everyone swoon with his tailored suits and thick, slick mane of hair, the side part has become a ubiquitous trend. But being this is New York, where trends have a short shelf life, this hairstyle has simmered down considerably. Yet once in a while, I spot it on a guy or two and no matter the trends, some guys were just made for this look.

Uptown/Downtown

Uptown/Downtown

East Village
1st Ave. and 1st St.

In the episode “The Maid” on the sitcom Seinfeld, the character Kramer finds himself in a “long distance” relationship with Jerry’s maid. He lives uptown on the UWS, she lives downtown and he finds himself lost and perplexed at the corner of 1st and 1st, that he refers to as the nexus of the universe, which is where I fittingly found this guy with his Uptown hat, at this very downtown location.

The end of the shift for one officer at the 1st Precinct in TriBeCa.  I like how he still has his uniform pants on, mixed with his own t-shirt. Professional and personal styles collide.

Sweat drenched on his tank and a head full of slick wet hair. The kind of look that can only be achieved by a good workout and getting the heart rate up. I’m liking the shorts over leggings look as well.

Moving Man

Chelsea

Rotating installations in the gallery district requires plenty of movers. I stumbled upon this mover on a particularly sweltering day, taking a break, aiming to cool off, lifting his sweat drenched shirt to get some ventilation.  I was drawn by all his ink covering both his arms and legs.

Osaka 6

Osaka 6

Chelsea
9th Ave. and 20th St.

The Osaka 6 shirt from the British label Superdry is one of their most iconic t-shirts. I even googled what it means and it actually has an interesting back story. But basically the label and the shirt is a convergence of the designer’s love for Americana mixed with Japanese designs and British tailored fits. Whatever the case, the guy sporting the shirt is a good hanger for it.

For those of you interested in sporting your own Osaka 6 shirt, click the link:  http://www.superdry.com/us/mens/t-shirts/details/37260/osaka-aero-t-shirt.
