Ringleader

Ringleader

Hudson Square
Spring and Varick St.

Jewelry is a very personal thing and just like clothing it can be done well or the opposite. I was struck by how this gent placed his rings at the pinky and ring finger. I used to think that all I needed was a good, solid watch but lately I’ve been adding rings, necklaces, bracelets and switching my pieces up. I’ve come to discover some great, not too expensive jewelry makers for guys and it’s nice to focus on the accessories instead of so heavily on the apparel.

Green Tee

Green Tee

SoHo
West Broadway and Grand St.

There are only so many ways you can change up a t-shirt, so I like it when it boils down to the subtle details to make it stand out just a bit. With this t-shirt, all it takes is the stripes on the pocket to give it a slight lift.

Silver

Silver

West Village
7th Ave. and 12th St.

Digging this man’s quilted, short, spread collar, grey, snap button coat with two different breast pockets. It’s even better that it matches his grey hair on top.

Belstaff

Belstaff

SoHo
Spring and Thompson St.

Belstaff is the classic British brand best known for their waterproof jackets. It is a great heritage brand that has been acquired by the Italians and recently re-branded itself to create a sexier, jet-set vibe with the designer Martin Cooper at the helm. This quilted jacket with the stand up collar is evidence that it has lost some of its stodgy presentation.

Man in Background

Man in Background

Nolita
Cafe Gitane

The woman in the foreground with the bright lips is my great friend Ann Yee (http://www.annyeecollection.com/), a very talented womenswear knitwear designer who I was out having Sunday brunch with. In the background is one of many stylish guys or persons in general you can find at Cafe Gitane in Nolita any day of the week. Another great four pocket jacket and grey jeans is a solid choice.

Four Pocket Jacket

Four Pocket Jacket

Union Square
5th Ave. and 14th St.

I’m a huge proponent of pockets in jackets and outerwear in general as it gives you less reason to carry a bag, which is something I try not to have on me. This four pocket version is both rugged and urban. The perfect piece to have during the city winters.

I Want

I Want

SoHo
Prince and Crosby St.

I want that shirt he’s wearing, I want those jeans, I want those boots, I want those shades. Hell, I don’t like bags at all, much less carrying a camera around, but I have to for this damn blog (just playin’), and I want his bag. I even want a strand of hair to fall on my forehead just like his.

Military Peacoat

Miltary Peacoat

Flatiron District
Broadway and 23rd St.

It’s pretty much black coat weather/season this time of year. The streets are blanketed with it. If must wear basic black at least make it a bit stylish with some details like this guy – double breasted, military style, slanted flack pockets, a nice collar and of course a good fit.

Throwback Thursday: Fur Shawl

Throwback Thursday: Fur Shawl

SoHo
Spring and Crosby St.

When I began compiling pictures for the blog last winter, this was one of the first guys I shot. No matter what your attitude towards fur, you can understand why I was immediately drawn to his coat and collar. The color combo itself deserves a thumbs up.

Grocery Day

Grocery Day

West Village
West 4th and Barrow St.

There is some great layering going on with this fella’s outfit. Different colors, patterns and textures all add up to weight and heft in his outfit without the bulk. The green, blue and brown combo also give nice visual stimulation.

Driving Shoes

Driving Shoes

Greenwich Village
6th Ave. and Bleecker St.

Driving shoes or driving moccasins are soft loafers with little rubber bumps for soles. They are very leisurely. I also equate them with being very Italian because the luxury label Tod’s from Italy makes the best and ahem….some of the most expensive pairs. I feel they instantly add that European touch as evidenced by this fellow.

Throwback Thursday: The Beautiful Ones

Throwback Thursday: The Beautiful Ones

West Village
Bleecker and Perry St.

Last spring, there was one particularly gorgeous day where it seemed every third person I passed was worthy of the blog. This real life Ken and Barbie epitomized the quality of goods I was encountering that day. Just a typical spring day for them, strolling down Bleecker, looking like they stepped out of GQ and Vogue, respectively.

The Opening

The Opening

West Village
Bleecker and Bank St.

A little ventilation keeps you cool if you tend to run warm. I like this shirt jacket with the double breast pockets. The way he has it opened up slightly towards the bottom creates an ease about the look. Nice touch with the way he flips the collar

Cuffed

Cuffed

East Village
Third Ave and 12th St.

I’m a fan of a long sleeved button down shirt where you flip the cuffs and it displays a different pattern or print. On his shirt I also notice the subtle detail of the plaid on his chest pocket and placket in a diagonal direction. It’s a small detail but it saves the shirt from being just another plaid shirt.

Boxer

Boxer

Chelsea
7th Ave. and 19th St.

I found this guy bypassing a slew of open cabs that all stopped to catch him as a fare, only to find that someone was picking him up as they hauled this box into the trunk. Him standing on the street gave me enough time to take a decent amount of shots. This is a great cold day outfit with his toggle coat, hat and scarf. I prefer dressing like this on colder days as opposed to any sort of puffy coat or bubble jacket.

Black Quilted Vest

Black Quilted Vest

Midtown East
54th and Lexington

Typically midtown is swarming with business casual looks and suits. The obligatory button down shirt with slacks combo leaves not much room for diversity, so as it gets colder, it’s up to the warm layer gear to do the work . The quilted vest here with various pockets, zippers, snap buttons and stand up collar, adds texture to his conservative outfit.

Solo on Lafayette

This guy is owning his preppy casual look and owning the street as well.

View From A Window

View From A Window

Lower East Side
Orchard and Rivington

I’m a big fan of double breast pocket shirts like this. I like how he contrasts light blue with dark blue and great pair of glasses. I spotted this guy out the window, across the street while having lunch at Irving Farm Coffee.

Turquoise

SoHo

I like the way he combines colors in his outfit. The dark maroon pants, anchors his light turquoise shirt and white sneakers.

Taxi Stance

Taxi Hail

Chelsea
8th Ave. and 20th St.

Taking pictures of guys with style, hailing cabs, is a God send, since you’re given an automatic stance and pose, not to mention it’s such a New York thing to be doing. I love the way this guy mixes his clothes and gives a sensory overload that clicks instead of clashes or overwhelms. From the colors, to the pockets, to the socks, the fade and wash in his denim shirt, the laces in his kicks and back wards cap – it’s thought out without feeling contrived.

Beach Days

Beach Days

West Village
6th Ave. and Bedford St.

In the summer, the lines tend to blur with beach attire hitting the concrete streets. I can definitely picture this guy hanging out in Montauk with his very nautical look, swim trunk style shorts and espadrilles-esque Tom’s shoes.

Buttoned Up

Buttoned Up

SoHo
Prince and Lafayette St.

It’s all about the shirt with this fellow – fully buttoned with three pockets. The fitted colored denim is a great shade of blue.
