Cardigan

Cardigan

SoHo
Thompson and Broome St.

Today felt like the first hint of fall with a slightly cool breeze that warranted a light jacket or sweater. I like this time of year when you can still wear t-shirts, but have that one extra layer like a jacket or sweater and keep it unbuttoned or unzipped. For me, it’s an open cardigan all the way.

The Hobbler

The Hobbler

West Village
Hudson and Christopher St.

This is a man after my own heart as his outfit is pretty much a replica of my daily summer ensemble – Nike kicks, black fitted jeans and solid colored t-shirt. I much more clean cut, so I’d forgo the the beard, backpack and crutches.

Nike Flyknits

Nike Flyknits
Hudson Square
Spring and Varick

I’m totally obsessed with Nike’s Flyknit Racer shoes. The two colors I’m jonesing after are sold out everywhere and I can’t settle for the other loud colors they come in. This dude is rocking the Chukka version as he speeds away and it was a reminder of how much I need those kicks in my life. But not the Chukka version. Only the Racer version in my color of choice will do. The heart wants, what the heart wants!

Tanked

Tanked
NoMad
5th Avenue and 27th St.

And we’re off! The summer has officially become hot and humid and that means tank tops are making the rounds heavily on the streets. This actually a modest version as lately I’ve come to see some tanks that are a lot more revealing and showy. As the summer progresses, I’m sure I’ll stumble upon a wide array of tanks.

Square Buckle

Square Buckle

SoHo
Prince and West Broadway

I’m on the hunt for the perfect square buckle belt. I’m finding that either the metal of the buckle is not up to par or it’s that the leather is not as quality as I’d like it to be. I like how this fellow’s looks a tad worn it, so I guess this is one time I have to go for vintage.

Fresh White

Fresh White

Flatiron District
5th Avenue and 24th St.

I recently read a quote from a well known menswear designer where he stated that every man should own a white shirt because if you’re tan or dark skinned, it adds amazing contrast and if you’re pale or light skinned it makes you look less so and brings out more color to your face. Wise words and I couldn’t agree more. Oh this gent, I’m digging how the white shirt contrasts the redness in his facial hair.

Bike Style

SoHo
West Broadway and Prince St.

Now that the weather has warmed up and it’s frequently sunny, I’m starting to notice more bikes on the streets. Where there’s more bikes, there’s more bike style. I’m happy to see the re-emergence of the short sleeve button down shirt for spring. These types of shirts only look good if the arm holes are fitted and close to the body and well above the elbow.

Color Block Jacket

Color Block Jacket

Hudson Square
Varick and Charlton St.

Color blocking is a nice way to break up the monotony of solid color apparel. The red and blue on this jacket is a nice compliment to each other. I also like that the hood is actually being worn and being utilized.

Navy Hooded Coat

Navy Hooded Coat

Hudson Square
Varick and Vandam St.

This type of hooded, 3/4 length coat was exactly the type I was looking for all this past fall and winter but could never find the right one. I did come close to finding one from the label Wings + Horns at Steven Alan but it was too long. But alas as the cold weather is waning, I’ll have to resume my hunt next year and I’ll have this pic as a reference.

Grunge

Grunge

Upper East Side
68th and Lexington

Back in the early 90’s the term and style of grunge was all the rage. Like all fads, trends, styles and fashions it’s due for an updated comeback. Not that I have seen enough evidence to support a comeback but this guy’s outfit with the loose flannel plaid shirt, baggy shorts and mismatched socks certainly reflects the style.

Knit Cap

Knit Cap

SoHo

He is wearing his knit, cream colored fisherman’s cap very well. His hooded army green coat and denim on denim outfit are also pretty solid.

Flasback Friday: Love In The Village

Greenwich Village
6th Ave. and 8th St.

Here’s one for Valentine’s Day. I caught this couple last summer having a moment.

Hoodie Shirt Jacket

Hoodie Shirt Jacket

Nolita
Houston and Elizabeth St.

Another hybrid in the form of a shirt jacket with a hood. He has all sorts of variants of grey in his outfit but breaks it up with some red, white and blue in his crewneck shirt. I’m digging the classic Adidas shell toe sneakers.

Dylan Ostrow on Kenmare

Derek on Kenmare

Nolita
Kenmare and Mott St.

I stopped Dylan on a Sunday stroll and asked to take his picture. He was up for it. I mainly like his green denim that matched his camo backpack and that he was wearing bracelets as well. His outfit was centered around earth tones which is great if you’re going for more subtle color.

Squint

Squint

NoHo
Lafayette and Great Jones St.

Somebody get this guy some shades. Aside from his lack of sun protection, what he does have going for him is those hefty Red Wing boots which are the perfect combination of rugged yet urban. They are easily identifiable from their signature rusty brown/orange hue.

Grey Cardigan

Grey Cardigan

Lower East Side
Allen and Rivington

Yesterday’s post Clean Lines was just one example of how I would dress and here’s yet another example of an outfit that would suit me. What can I say? I love my blues, greys, shawl collars, button downs and dark denim.  I’ll also take brown footwear any day of the week.

Pink Tee

Pink Tee

Flatiron District
5th Ave. and 24th St.

Today was a pretty balmy day in New York. I saw coats, blazers, and sweaters all come off in favor of the first layer of clothing. I even saw a few tank tops today! Some people are extremists. This guy is the perfect example of removing the warmer layer to take advantage of warmer weather.

Labeled Up

Labeled Up

Chelsea
Blue Bottle Coffee

Labels, labels, labels. This guy has aplenty.Even his coffee cup has a label. I think when an outfit is more athletic and sport related, there tends to be more of stamp with labels. His bike from Bianchi is pretty stylin’ in the white shade and he got a lot of compliments on it from people passing by.

Suede Boots

Suede Boots

SoHo
Mercer St.

Tan, suede desert boots are so right up my alley. I could wear them with everything, even shorts. His are a great color and I like how he keeps them slightly open for a more casual, loose look.

Shawl Cardigan

Shawl Cardigan

Chinatown
Canal and Ludlow

I am so a shawl cardigan type of guy. Something about that type of collar that makes me feel so fall-like. I like his beige/cream color and its waffle knit.

Deeply Revealing

Deep Henley

Lower East Side
Orchard and Delancey St.

Most typical henleys usually have three buttons, but the one this guy is wearing goes a bit deeper and is more revealing with five buttons. Another great alternative to “showing some skin”

Waiting On The Corner

Waiting On The Corner

West Village
Corner Bistro

Corner Bistro is one of the best burger joints in the city. I found this guy waiting for a date at – where else – the corner.  The second wait comes when you get inside and have to wait in line. His colored t-shirt made him stand out.

Bike Lean

Bike Lean

Flatiron District
Broadway and 25th St.

Pausing on the street, waiting for the light to change. Red lights are the best for capturing guys with style. Another day, another t-shirt, and today’s color is green.

Short Sleeved Henley

Short Sleeved Henley

West Village
7th Ave. South and Barrow St.

A henley shirt is a great alternative to your everyday t-shirt. Henleys usually come in long sleeve form, so it’s nice to see a short sleeve version. I’m digging the way he matches his whites at the top and bottom and contrasts it with his dark jeans and backpack.

What guy doesn’t stand out wearing the color red? We all should incorporate it more into our wardrobes.

OBEY Flying Lotus T-Shirt

OBEY Flying Lotus T-Shirt

West Chelsea
10th Ave. and 26th St.

OBEY Clothing is the street wear label created by fine artist/graphic designer Shepard Fairey, who illustrated the infamous “Hope” poster of president Barack Obama. I see his logo on guys all over New York, usually on skater guys wearing OBEY hats.  I was happy to come across a guy wearing the label’s flying lotus tee, as it’s one of my favorite designs of the label.

Tuesday Tank

Leggings

Union Square
Broadway and 18th St.

Sweat drenched on his tank and a head full of slick wet hair. The kind of look that can only be achieved by a good workout and getting the heart rate up. I’m liking the shorts over leggings look as well.

Back To School

Back To School

Upper West Side
Lincoln Center

I really can’t advocate anyone over the age of twenty wearing Abercrombie & Fitch clothing, but as a young, collegiate guy, he gets a free pass.

Dark Tones

Dark Tones

Chelsea
9th Ave.and 17th St.

The black and navy color combo is a bit heavy on the dark shades, so the best way to break it up is to add some color. This guy has the good fortune of having some ink with color and adds a flash of neon with the soles of his shoes and laces.  It also helps that his skin tone is a bit light to give the black and navy some contrast.

City Camouflage

Chelsea
West 23rd St.

This is real camouflage, where his outfit blends in with the scenery.  I’m feeling his cargo pants with the pockets on the front thighs as opposed to the side legs.

Rolled Up

Rolled Up

Flatiron District

Rolled up pant legs are a nice change of pace from the ubiquity of shorts during the summer.  A nice way to add ventilation yet still being fully dressed.

Laughing Man

Laughing Man

Upper West Side

I came across this guy joking around with his buddy (not pictured). He looks very fit, athletic and sporty. It’s nice to be able to capture some levity on a New Yorker once in a while.

Tank Season

Flatiron
5th Ave. and 22nd St.

Now that the temperatures are spiking in the city, I’m confident that I’ll be taking a lot of pictures with guys in tank tops. But not all tanks are good tanks and some guys can pull them off better than others. Here is one such case of a good tank. Simple, classic, not too showy.

Frats In The City

Frats In The City

Lower Manhattan
South Street Seaport

Ok, I don’t know if they are actual frat guys, but they have that way about them. It’s collegiate, mid-western, not so much about style, but swagger and identifiable through the baggy cargo and cut off jean shorts, the backpack and the Abercrombie & Fitch look.  Coincidentally I watched them walked into that very store across the street after I took their pic which I found very appropriate.

Backpack

Backpack

TriBeCa
West Broadway and Murray St.

To many people, a backpack paired with a shirt and tie would be considered a fashion faux pas, but I’ll be damned if he isn’t somehow making this combo work!
