Uniform Dressing

Uniform Dressing

SoHo
6th Ave. and Spring St.

Blue button shirt with the sleeves rolled up. Check. Fitted blue jeans worn in just so. Check. Brown desert or chukka boots. Check. All of these add up to a uniform way of dressing for me personally. It’s not about wearing the same thing everyday, but having a simplified way of knowing what works well and having a variation of that same look. It makes life easier.

Wide Lapels

Wide Lapels

Greenwich Village
University Place and 12th St.

This is one of the bigger, heftier coats I’ve seen this winter. The wide lapels are old school and I’ve seen their re-emergence on coats on a few guys around town lately. I’m digging his printed scarf as well as his navy beanie which matches nicely to the coat.

Dave Lilja

Dave Lilja

NoLIta
Cafe Habana

I stumbled upon model Dave Lilja at the typically mobbed Cafe Habana in Nolita on a Saturday afternoon. What caught my eye was his woven brightly hued sneakers and his fur trimmed coat. He had a great look since he’s Swedish and Filipino and his agency is based out of Denmark. He mentioned that he was about to head to the Midwest to shoot a campaign for the Express brand and that he had also done some work for H&M. Upon googling him, I could see why he makes a superb model. I took the liberty of posting his link below.

He is wearing his knit, cream colored fisherman’s cap very well. His hooded army green coat and denim on denim outfit are also pretty solid.

This was quite the unique vest this guy was wearing with lapels and all the pockets. I love how thrown together he looks and the small accessory details of his tortoiseshell frames, bracelet, watch and key chain..

Flashback Friday: Awash in Grey

Flashback Friday: Awash in Grey

Lower East Side
Delancey St.

Everyone is talking about how they can’t wait for spring and I couldn’t agree more, but what I find interesting is that there are some guys who dress opposite the season. This guy for example was wearing a wool sweater and hat in the dead heat of summer on a humid day. But I did find his harem sweat pants and wide shawl sweater very funky, so he can do whatever he wants!

Drive By

Drive By

West Village
Greenwich Ave. and 12th St.

This shot was literally a drive by as I was in my friend’s car in the passenger seat and we were waiting for the light to change when I spotted this fella approaching and as the light turned green she slowly drove past as I rolled the window down so I could capture him. For me, it’s all about those crisp, white, Nike kicks.

Zip Up Vest

Zip Up Vest

Greenwich Village
Thompson and Houston

A few months back I posted a shot of a guy in midtown wearing a black quilted vest who had a more business look related to that part of town. See link below.

In this shot, another quilted black vest is showcased by this fella and his has a more downtown vibe. I’m fond of how each vest represents their respective ‘hood.

Shipley & Halmos Pop Up Store

Shipley & Halmos
385 Canal Street/ Open until February 23rd

The American menswear brand Shipley & Halmos is the eponymous line of Sam Shipley and Jeff Halmos. It has a great laid back feel with a very west coast vibe mixed with an east coast aesthetic. I’ve always loved the cut and quality of their clothes and they are the rare brand that fits right off the rack for me, requiring very little tailoring. I’ve been a huge fan of their gear ever since I first discovered them in Barney’s back in 2009; so to stumble upon their pop-up store a few blocks from my apartment was a sheer delight.

Shipley & Halmos won me over even more when I walked into their temporary digs to discover that the store takes its cues from and models itself after the surrounding neighborhood of Chinatown, particularly Canal Street, which is littered with tons of souveneir/hole-in-the-wall/tchotchke stores. For natives and visitors who have spent time on Canal Street and experienced store after store of cheap retail chaos, the S&H mimic is pretty great, albeit more serene. The playful irony makes the store fun, but once you see the threads, that’s where things gets serious! Their current spring line, handsomely and neatly displayed on the racks and tables most definitely put me in the mood for higher temps. I brought along model Tony Divirgilio who kindly volunteered to bring the clothes to life and he did not disappoint. The tanks, pastels and beach inspired looks with flourishes of nautical for the summer is specifically tailored to Tony’s sense of style. Both he and I were raving about each piece of clothing between shots in the changing room.

As I mentioned, the store is temporary, so take a gander down to 385 Canal Street to see what an actual Shipley & Halmos store could one day look like. I hope there are plans for a real brick and mortar location since this pop up is pretty inventive, a fun novelty and provides a great foreshadow .

Check back later this afternoon for another post on Shipley & Halmos featuring Tony Divirgilio.

Throwback Thursday: Pants Rolled Up

Throwback Thursday: Pants Rolled Up

Greenwich Village
7th Ave. South and Bleecker

I love this shot taken in front of the classic Ottomanelli’s meat and butcher shop in the village. The guy I captured in front of it last spring on a very humid May day took matters into his own hands by rolling up his pants to cool off.

This One’s For Me

This One's For Me

SoHo
Prince and Lafayette

I generally don’t play favorites with outfits or pictures I take since I’m very diplomatic, but this guy’s ensemble is a stand out for me. Something about him nailing the spread collar, the lapels and color of the jacket, the hint of red in the pocket square, the brown knit tie, the shades, the cuff of his jeans and monk strap shoes. His precision is off the charts. I hate shopping, but this makes me want to go and replicate this look.

Man In The Middle

This is a nice variation on the traditional peacoat with the side zipper. I like the way he winterizes the rest of his look with the hat, fingerless gloves and boots.

Inside Job

From Inside

Upper East Side
Dean & Deluca/ 85th and Madison

I was scarfing down a bagel and having an espresso at the Dean & Deluca food shop on the Upper East Side when I realized I was sitting in the perfect corner window to people watch and take pictures. I was off to an appointment so I only managed to get this one shot of this guy adjusting his hood. Not bad for only sitting there a few minutes.

Throwback Thursday: Above The Crowd

Throwback Thursday: Above The Crowd

SoHo
Prince and Mercer St.

This guy’s height alone made him tower over the typical Saturday afternoon crowds in SoHo. This was taken last spring on one of the first really warm days after the winter which is something I’m jonesing for. I love a great fitted, simple grey sweatshirt-like crewneck like his. It’s one of my uniform pieces in my wardrobe and is worn as such.

The woman in the foreground with the bright lips is my great friend Ann Yee (http://www.annyeecollection.com/), a very talented womenswear knitwear designer who I was out having Sunday brunch with. In the background is one of many stylish guys or persons in general you can find at Cafe Gitane in Nolita any day of the week. Another great four pocket jacket and grey jeans is a solid choice.

The khaki shirt, like khakis themselves have a perfectly relaxed weekend quality about them. It’s a color more associated with pants, that it’s rare to see it on the top. I’ll have to add it to my list.

Leather Bomber

Leather Bomber

Chinatown
Grand and Elizabeth St.

I wonder if his leather jacket is vintage or not. A lot of brands nowadays like to give their clothes that worn-in, old, vintage-y look. Some are successful at it while other brands make it look studied. Or I could be wrong altogether and he purchased it new and had years of wear and tear to give it that lived in look which is how I feel most leather jackets should look.

This was a bit of a miracle shot to get all three of these very stylish guys aligned and unobstructed as they were crossing the street. All three of them are nailing their own individual look with such nonchalance. They’re all very inspiring.

Another hybrid in the form of a shirt jacket with a hood. He has all sorts of variants of grey in his outfit but breaks it up with some red, white and blue in his crewneck shirt. I’m digging the classic Adidas shell toe sneakers.

Today feels truly cold in New York. The most frigid in a long time and yet I’m still able to capture stylish cold weather looks. Layering heavily is the way to go if still want to look your best while shielding yourself from the elements. I particularly like the shawl collar on this guy’s pea coat and contrasting the blue with the light hat and scarf.

For Jules

Chelsea

I recently re-connected with my old college friend Julie whom I hadn’t seen in a long time. It was like no time had passed at all during our reunion. On one of our recent outings together we spotted this super cool looking dude. That hat, that leather and those shades mixed with the hoodie and tight black jeans cemented the swagger he was pulling off that day and of course Julie was quite enamored by it all so I dedicate this post to her.

Red is one of the best colors to pick up the drab winter weather wardrobe as displayed by this guy. It just gives it that nice pop and is best done through the accessories – hats, gloves, layering piece etc.

I want that shirt he’s wearing, I want those jeans, I want those boots, I want those shades. Hell, I don’t like bags at all, much less carrying a camera around, but I have to for this damn blog (just playin’), and I want his bag. I even want a strand of hair to fall on my forehead just like his.

It’s pretty cold out in New York, but even with the frigid temperatures, you’ll always find the guy who defies the weather and puts style over comfort. It was interesting to note that most of the people walking by him and surrounding him were bundled in heavy black and/or puffy coats but he stood out.

Selfie

Flatiron District
5th Ave. and 24th St.

I caught this guy taking a selfie on his phone. The reason I knew it was a selfie and not him taking a picture of something else was because he kept primping, preening and posing with different facial expressions to get it just right. I admire that he did it so openly at such a busy intersection. I guess people also need an audience as well when they take pictures of themselves. But hey, he looks good so it’s all good.
