Bonobos Spring ’15 Presentation

Soho, Dune Studios
Bonobos Spring ’15 Presentation

I always love attending the Bonobos presentations. They always feel like warm, intimate, personal affairs rather than perfunctory, clinical fashion shows. The spring showing took place a stone’s throw away from my apartment in Soho at Dune studios with stellar models, some covet worthy pieces, hors d’Oeuvres and beer, wine and cocktails. Now that’s my idea of showing. As per usual, my favorite person in the room was PR rep Erin Grant who always keeps me fully up to date on the brand and all the ways they are refining it. This spring they are doing great things with knitwear, so much so that I really wanted to get a singular shot of the model sporting my favorite sweater and was fortunate to get Erin in the shot as well. I really enjoyed how pared down all the looks were with hints of details whether it be suede fabrication, Nike kicks, pops of color, flashes of print, a pocket square in a denim jacket or taking a lightweight piece and mixing it with a heavier layering piece. Suffice it to say, even though fall just began, spring can’t get here fast enough.

Garrett McCarthy for Bonobos

Garrett McCarthy
Bonobos Guideshop, 35 Crosby St./SoHo, NYC

Once again, give it up for Garrett. Doesn’t Garrett make a great model for Bonobos? This was yet another case of him making it hard on me to decide which shots to use, since there were many to choose from. I guess there are bigger problems to have. I will say anything where we shot with that handsome couch I was partial to, but for variety sake we worked the whole room.

I do have to mention the great staff at the Guideshop who were very hospitable, helpful, friendly and allowed us a fun afternoon to play dress up. Lindsey, Regan, Giulia and Jon gave us room and autonomy in their work environment and entertained us with easy tunes that Garrett seemed to know all the words to. Lindsey, a Bonobos guide was helpful in helping Garrett match some items to create a great look. I pitched in as well by choosing the denim, but maintained that whatever he wore, it had to be Garrett’s choice since my blog is about men’s personal style and my dictates have to kept to a minimum at best. Erin came down from the offices in the Flatiron District to lend her support and to meet the man of the hour. All in all it was a great way to spend a rainy, snowy Tuesday afternoon.

To say that Bonobos is a fun, hassle free place to pick up some last minute gifts is an understatement. They take the guess work out of choosing great items for the guys in your life. It’s inclusive, stylish, functional with great fit being an integral part of making guys look super dapper. I must reiterate that if you’re down in Soho, doing some shopping or browsing, go check out their awesome Guideshop at 35 Crosby Street.

Garrett McCarthy At Bonobos Guideshop

Garrett McCarthy
Bonobos Guideshop, 35 Crosby St./SoHo, NYC

For anyone who doubts that hastags actually work, my blog is living proof that they do. The very gracious and beautiful Erin Grant who is a Public Relations Associate for the menswear e-commerce brand Bonobos found me via a Bonobos hashtag I used for the original post I did on Garrett McCarthy who’s featured on my site. She reached out to me with a nice email and extended an invitation to their holiday party at the brand’s Guideshop on Crosby street. Meeting her in person was even better than our email correspondence since she showed nothing but enthusiasm for my work and the guys and style on the blog. The woman is encouragement personified! Erin went one step further and invited me to shoot pictures of the store and of course I had to choose Garrett to be featured in those shots since he was the catalyst that connected us. If you’ve seen Garrett’s prior posts you know he brings it and he does not disappoint here. He and Bonobos fit like a glove. He certainly does the brand justice with the way he wears it and vice versa. This will be the first of two posts today with him rocking Bonobos, so stay tuned later this afternoon. Garrett, like me, is also a fan of the brand and from a business standpoint has admired the way they have grown the company and is even fraternity brothers with CEO Andy Dunn at Sigma Chi.If you want to purchase anything you see Garrett wearing, click on the photos for all the details.

I’ve been a huge fan of Bonobos since their inception back in 2007 and I’ll never forget one of the rare sample sales they held in their former office digs years ago, where I scored a braided belt that I still wear to this day for ten bucks plus some polos that have become my go-tos when I don’t want to think about what to wear. Also the fact that they served free beer while you shopped won my loyalty to them. It is a great guy-centric menswear brand that has mainly had an online presence but have since expanded to brick and mortar Guideshops throughout the U.S. For those in New York, I highly recommend visiting the Crosby street store, since the staff there is amazing and so hospitable. You can make an appointment or walk in, but either way it feels like you’re trying clothes on in a cozy living room as opposed to your typical retail environment.

Bonobos, both online (http://www.bonobos.com/) and at the Guideshops (http://www.bonobos.com/guideshop), is a great place to pick up any last minute gifts for the men in your life or to my male readers, to score some nice threads for yourself to look great at all your holiday festivities and to keep you looking good all winter. Their gift bundle packages are a superb idea and well designed. Specifically for the Guideshops, here is some easy info:

    • Guideshops:
      • Electronic Wish List– Bonobos Guides will make an electronic wish list from your most coveted items, complete with photos, prices, sales, and link. They will send these wish lists to you personal contacts of choice!
  • Seasonal Bundles¬†Curated by Bonobos designers
    • Guideshop gift card experience– gift cards can ONLY be purchased at Guidehshops. Everyone likes a new/exciting experience, so give your guy a Guidehsop gift card and book him a time where you can both go in and pick out/ get fitted in some new duds.

Introducing Garrett McCarthy

Garrett McCarthy
Lower East Side/Union Square

The words preppy, waspy and plaid immediately spring to mind when describing Garrett. That’s not to say he can be summed up with just three words, but those three most certainly suit Mr. McCarthy as I can easily picture him conducting his daily routine in some preppy east coast enclave reminiscent of the back drop of a glossy Ralph Lauren advertisement, be it Nantucket, Greenwich, Connecticut or Newport, Rhode Island. The truth is Garrett is actually a well mannered, even keel, down to earth guy from the Midwest (Do they make them any other way out there?). Also, the guy may dress preppy, but he does it in a way where he doesn’t take that label too seriously and where it comes across as relaxed, urban, classic and not a caricature. It’s what suits him, he wears it well and to each his own.

Garrett is a man of many hats. His varied interests include history, technology, religion and philosophy, he’s a voracious reader of books, has a head for business and has impressive taste in restaurants for someone relatively new to the city. He works part time as an EMT for Central Park, is also a fire fighter and takes great pride in his ability to save lives. He studied development neuroscience at an all male university, yet has a strong passion for design and menswear, as he appreciates the aesthetic of men’s clothes. He is currently working on building his own label/menswear line entitled Fargo Boulevard, with a slow roll out beginning with ties, while he’s also on his way to interning at a reputable design house where he hopes to learn more about the craft and trade he clearly has an eye for. A blog that he publishes – Goodpeoplegofar.com, focuses on architecture and design that he connects to apparel, since he states that “clothing is architecture that you wear”. His aesthetic taste leans towards older, heritage or classic brands with an emphasis on academia. His other part time job at the Gant Rugger store in Nolita connects him to two men he admires in men’s fashion – Christopher Bastin, creative director of Gant and Michael Bastian who designs an eponymous line for Gant.

Shooting Garrett has been a breeze, since he has done some modeling, I just let him do his thing – a smile here, a lean there and literally the rest takes care of itself. The one thing I did notice in editing his shots was that he possesses the ability to look youthful and slightly baby faced, yet at other times more mature, smoldering and a bit of a matinee idol from the 1950’s. As I mentioned above, plaid is one of his signatures. He even jokes it’s his favorite color. I did make a reference to him in an earlier post a few weeks back about how I was discussing shooting him in something other than plaid, but he declared he loved it so. I get that, as he was preaching to the choir, since he and I could have a plaid contest to see who owns more, though something tells me he might edge me out a bit, but not by much.

Garrett will be featured in the blog periodically. Check back later this afternoon for another post on him.
