Mini Check

Mini Check

Chelsea
7th Avenue and 22nd St.

I love a good blue dress shirt. So crisp, so fresh, so summery. The appeal of this one is the gingham pattern in a more subtle, muted, mini version and the contrast of the solid white placket on one side as well as the inside collar.

Maroon Shorts

Maroon Shorts

I’m digging the color scheme of this outfit with the blue shirt, black sunglasses, maroon shorts and white kicks, all mononchromatic. Bonus for the way he cuffs up his shorts above the knee so they look more well proportioned.

Rough Around The Edges

What can I say? Not every guy is going to be the perfect gentleman. I don’t advocate calling women bitches but his shirt is more about humor than anything else. Here’s my take on his shirt – his preference for alcohol is beer, his ride of choice is a motorcycle and his desire for company is for beautiful women.

Neon Shirt

Brighter days are here again and so is brighter apparel. Neon in my wardrobe usually finds itself in very subtle ways – shoe laces, on a small logo, or a pocket and usually on some form of athletic gear. If you do wear it, it’s best to stick to just one item as you can clearly see it stands out and speaks for itself.

Slim Chinos

Slim ChinosChelsea
7th Avenue and 22nd St.

If you work in an office that doesn’t require a suit or a tie, here is a clean, fitted, appropriate, professional outfit that looks good any day of the week. Embrace the slimmer fit and pants that literally hug your legs and then make sure the shirt you pair with it is proportioned to the pants. No billowy, blousy, ill fitting shirts.

Slow Week 108 copy

Nolita

I find that European men in the city are more prone to wear the double breasted jacket. I like the mix of casual cotton twill fabric and side pockets with formality and structure of a typical wool suit.

How nice to see a proper hat in sea of baseball caps. His accessories game is pretty tight with this ensemble and he’s even sporting some colored nails.

Short Shorts

Short Shorts

Greenwich Village
Carmine and Bleecker St.

The shorts he’s wearing were originally those baggy, loose, wide legged, uninspiring cargo shorts that still too many guys painfully wear, even in New York. I didn’t realize that by inventively cutting a few inches off the hem would make these shorts so much more appealing as this crafty guy seemed to do.

Square Buckle

I’m on the hunt for the perfect square buckle belt. I’m finding that either the metal of the buckle is not up to par or it’s that the leather is not as quality as I’d like it to be. I like how this fellow’s looks a tad worn it, so I guess this is one time I have to go for vintage.

Mankles

No Socks And Loafers

Greenwich Village
Thompson and Houston St.

I was reading an article today in New York magazine about the term mankles (http://nymag.com/thecut/2014/05/men-throw-out-your-socks-its-mankles-season.html) – referring to the time of year when it’s not quite as hot outside for shorts, but men want to feel the sun on the lower part of their bodies, so they roll up their pants to reveal their ankles. That or have pants that are short enough to reveal them already. It is an erogenous zone and showing them off via pants can be much more attractive than seeing nice legs in unsightly, baggy, ill-fitting cargo shorts.

Flecks Of Gold

Penn Station
7th Avenue and 34th St.

The hot, sticky, sweaty days have arrived in the concrete jungle. As evidenced by this gent, you gotta keep dry and sweat free by dabbing. His tattoos and accessories are what really give this fella panache. The goggle-like, thick black frames, the gold watch and tiny gold earring placed mid lobe and backward cap makes him look more downtown than the suburban crush that is Penn Station.

I can’t with Garrett and his Pendleton plaid shirt. I can’t because I want it. I love the one chest pocket and the color. I also like how he sports a henley shirt underneath the plaid and of course the green nautical bracelet.

Black Camo Shorts

West Village
Hudson and Charles St.

Here we are back to shorts season and first out of the gate is a nice pair of black camoflouge, high above the knee and without all that bagginess or looseness that can make a guy’s legs look thinner than they are. Like most things on this blog, it’s all about the fit.

Fresh White

Fresh White

Flatiron District
5th Avenue and 24th St.

I recently read a quote from a well known menswear designer where he stated that every man should own a white shirt because if you’re tan or dark skinned, it adds amazing contrast and if you’re pale or light skinned it makes you look less so and brings out more color to your face. Wise words and I couldn’t agree more. Oh this gent, I’m digging how the white shirt contrasts the redness in his facial hair.

Now that the weather has warmed up and it’s frequently sunny, I’m starting to notice more bikes on the streets. Where there’s more bikes, there’s more bike style. I’m happy to see the re-emergence of the short sleeve button down shirt for spring. These types of shirts only look good if the arm holes are fitted and close to the body and well above the elbow.

No matter which way the winds blow in fashion, style or trends, there are some things that never seem to be impacted by trends. The iconic Ralph Lauren polo player logo seems like it will always be a solid fact of life, just like the Nike swoosh. I certainly don’t see it as much as back in the day, but whenever it does appear it’s like an old friend you’re always happy to see.

Your typical skateboarder in New York is pretty identifiable with their hipster, cool, downtown way of dressing. I guess you really can’t judge a book by it’s cover.

There are two occassions where an all black ensemble is very appropriate – the first being super formal in a tuxedo, the second being badass in some leather, jeans and riding a motorcycle. Spending an afternoon shopping with him throughout Soho and Nolita I could tell he had a good eye and good taste.I covet his wardrobe.

I did come close to finding one from the label Wings + Horns at Steven Alan but it was too long. But alas as the cold weather is waning, I’ll have to resume my hunt next year and I’ll have this pic as a reference.

This time of year with the weather transitioning and being so precarious ,it can hard to know how to dress. You want to wear a jacket, but then you get hot or you just want to run out with a t-shirt on but then a breeze or chill sets in. I like this guy’s solution where he positions his jacket as worn but has it drape off his body. Inventive to say the least. I am fond of his slouchy grey henley shirt.

Back in the early 90’s the term and style of grunge was all the rage. Like all fads, trends, styles and fashions it’s due for an updated comeback. I was inside the menswear store Odin in Soho perusing the racks of drool worthy clothes and labels and afterwards, when I stepped out I ran into this visitor from Australia who let me talk his picture after I complimented his waffle like, bright neon sweater. He even urged me to peek at the tag on the back of his sweater to read the label since he couldn’t remember where he got it offhand and lo and behold it was from the British brand Folk who were prominently displayed in Odin. I guess it was kismet.

There’s always this specific time of year when spring is officially here, but the temperature only slightly upticks. For some people after a brutal winter, that small increase in warmth is a enough to throw on shorts, despite the lingering chill in the air. Such was the case this past weekend where I saw an onslaught of shorts on guys who were definitely pre-spring attired.
